Dear Europhiles,

The time is getting close in regards to "fledging" our Europa Classic Kit #A012 Tail # N127ZP. Other than a few punch list items, a thorough weight and Balance followed by our DAR inspection our Bird is ready to go. With that in mind, I am inquiring about the possibility of getting some flying time in a monowheel configured Europa.

I live in Rochester, NY and if there was somebody with a flying monowheel within a reasonable traveling distance I would love to work out any details in regards to the aforementioned request. If your a CFI with a monowheel that would be all too perfect, however, even some right seat time as a passenger would be helpful as well. It would just be nice to pick a builder/flyers brains on all things Europa monowheel if you know what I mean.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Cheers,

Jeff,I cant help you with the mono wheel. I guess I can't help you at all other than with some advice. I did ten hours on a Katana DA-20 before I flew my Europa. I loved it but only flying 152's I would have loved anything. I remember saying this would be a perfect plane with a foot or two less wing. Once I flew my Europa I new I had my wish. Yes she's a tri but the katana is a good choice to get some time in if nothing else is available for the flying part. Then get some tail time in whatever tail dragger you can find. I know a few guys that did some duel mono glider time before they flew the Europa mono with some good results. Anyway get what you can get... then taxie her as much as possible. Then fly her in some still mornings and you'll be fine. What about it Troy?
Get the time off and bring her to Rough River in the middle of September for the fly-in. They'll be more monos and mono pilots for you to pick their brains.
Good Luck!!

Hi Jeff P.

I tried to reply to this post yesterday on a computer at work but hit a snag somehow with the forum. So here is the belated verses:

Hi Jeff P.

I am still trying to get the hang of it myself it seems at times. I only have 37 hours only in my Classic Monowheel so I am no expert. However, I would advise getting 6-10 hours in a tail dragger just prior to first flight, followed by some right seat time in a Monowheel if possible. If not, just think about looking far down the runway, getting approach speeds exactly as the book says. Do it early when it is calm and no crosswind. Get a picture of the correct deck angle in you perifereal(sp) vision but look way down the runway. When the tailwheel touches first the stick should by now be all the way back. Add or keep a little power on to arrest a too fast settling or a bounce if it occurs. Don't try to salvage a crappy landing set up. Go around and try again. Less shame in that than bouncing all over the runway. Use turf if at all possible when starting out. Expect the bird to leap off the ground and be ready with right rudder when you gently throttle up. More importantly,(for me anyway) was to expect it to want to climb very steeply when it leaves the ground. I actually have to put in a little nose down trim before take off and my weight and balance if right on. Hope this helps. Email me off list if you have any questions.
