Hope not to bore all, but thought this info should be passed on. Did all 

testing within a 2 hour time period, same temp, same altitudes. at 2 pm went 

up and had wot of 3110, installed a 1/2 inch spacer on air filter that would 

keep air filter 1/2 inch further from firefall, went up again and had wot of 

3160. then changed scat tube out for rubber tube from cowl to air box and 

had wot of 3230, but  had egts of 1420 and 1160, not willing to give up rpms 

installed a plate in outlet of air box knowing this to be a hit or miss. 

what a hit, egt at wot within 10, at cruise within 35 and within 15 below 

cruise. Have photos if any would like them, I am still excited about this

Dave,

     Your experiments sound good.  Send me the photos  and a few words for the newsletter.  I have always thought that the way air  goes into the airbox and having the air filter that close to the back of the  airbox just had to be decreasing overall airflow to the engine.  I think  you are onto something good.

Sounds a good step forward Dave, I had an uneven WOT running with my

Esqual when I flew it last but had a bigger complications to go after so

didn't do much experimentation.

Be good to see the pictures. 



I have installed a smooth rubber elbow between the airfilter box(Arion

supply) and the carby while it was back in the workshop and a new Naca

scoop inlet to the airfilter box. Hoping that will smooth airflow, I

don't think it will cure the WOT running though and intend to read some

back posts of the Jab engines on Yahoo for ideas, maybe something about

the main jet...



I don't have the benefit of 6 egt's.....just 2, hoping ignorance is

bliss.



Great to meet Buz yesterday at OSH, amazing to a Brit where the anal

approach to airfield control is legendary, we were in the overhead at 3K

taking some pics and I asked if we could land and go to Vintage, 'sure

call final on 27' and we were down and being directed to where they were

temporarily parking up the old fellas. Buz roared up is his 'Gaitor'!



We've headed North and are at St Ignace for a few days (opposite

Mackinac) before we head back to Appleton to give the 172 back, Then to

the show in the car

I made up the filter spacer thinking no one would see it, don"t look at the  hole spacing.  

 Didn"t get a chance to epoxy in the center plate -that I think is the egt  cure of the decade, giving smoother air into carb and in turn having egts closer  together

Dave,

     I have the photos, but not sure I understand how  the 1/2 in spacer works.  Can you explain more and maybe send an additional  photo as to how it moves the filter further away from the firewall?  The  rubber tube from air box to carb is understandable, as is the insert to keep the  air from being too turbulent, but just don't understand how you moved the filter  1/2 in further away from the firewall and still got it to fit in the air  box.  Did you modify the air box?

 It just fits around the air filter as shown and fits perfectly  on original air box. The original 4 screws will even work that hold the air  box cover in place.  What it does is acts as a spacer to keep the filter  1/2 inch further out.  I made this up prior to any flights so I could  document all changes having same flight conditions. It is made from stock alum.  then drilled out to lighten it. Thinking of making it out of wood because it is  not in intake airflow, weight thing. When I did the filter thing I had no change  in egts, egts changed only when I change to air box inlet tube.

 You gotta tell me, will I get stuck with the motor home, or should I wait  and come later in the week

Hi Dave,

            Excited as to  what you have done, I have the same problem controling the temp on No. 5 EGT  only, where it can be up to 150 deg F higher that the others.

 Dave,. the plate you put into the outlet of the airbox, I presume is about  3" long, does it extend the full inside dia. of the outlet pipe?

 You know when I put this "plate" in it was a total hit or miss thing, I  guessed at the length and most important direction. With direction of  airflow, I thought it best installed as I did, forward and aft. and yes length  is about 3.5 inches. If your going to play with this, have an open mind, first  try may not work

Thanks, Dave.  As to bringing your motor home, yes, I certainly  would.  Only some areas are really bad, but some are OK, as I see some  parked with no problems at all.  I have heard that the camping registration  people were taking people out on golf carts to look at potential spots, but I  don't know if that is for sure, or is they are still doing that.  Hope to  see you soon.
