Bad news!
A small aircraft crashed at Kapowsin, WA airport yesterday. From photos of the wreckage, it's clearly a Zodiac. The damage to the wings make it difficult to determine from the photos which version of the 601 was involved. I'm a 601HD builder, and I can't see clear evidence of the center section and outer panel wing design, so I'm thinking it's an XL.
The accident reportedly occurred on takeoff. The airplane was briefly airborne, according to witnesses. The 60 year old pilot was dead at the scene. The passenger, also said to be 60, was conscious and alert when he was removed from the wreckage and taken to a hospital.
This summarizes reports on KOMO Channel 4 and the Seattle Times.

Article with photo is here:
http://www.komonews.com/news/local/99574344.html
Can't positively ID the plane from the photo, but it does say in the article:
"Several private pilots who live near the airstrip said they believed this was the first time up in the air for this plane, described as a Zodiac Model CH 601 HDS. "
The plane is relatively intact, including wing attachments. My very uneducated opinion based on the wrinkles in the skin is it nosed in pretty hard.
My prayers and condolences to the pilot and his family.

I shared a few laughs and discussions with the pilot who died in this
601 in the weeks prior to the accident. He had some issues with the oil
and the prop(an electric reversible type). He spent several hours taxing
back and forth and seemed to have resolved any issues that had given him
any concern. He had a bottle of champagne ready to celebrate the
conclusion of his flight. Yes the plane had not flown for years, but it
seemed he had meticulously checked everything out with his A&P who spent
many hours along side him in preparation for the flight.
The article in KOMO news does not mention the whole story about how he
was observed at a high angle of attack wallowing around before striking
the ground and cartwheeling to a stop.
I will not speculate as to the cause, but it seems the engine was still
running from lack of any reports that it was not by witnesses.
I shared a hanger with Mr Mc Donald and he will be greatly missed!
