Hello all, I was flying this weekend in the beautiful Appalachian mountains. I landed at an old friends strip. I had a good landing. As a matter of fact, I have had no "rough landings" in a while. When I landed, the rubber spacers on my main gear split and came out.

Maybe this post will save someones life. Check those spacers. They are very important.

Thanks for sharing your story and giving credit to the Lord. I have always had problems with those rubber spacers breaking down and wearing out and allowing the gear to loosen up to the point it would rock back and forth. I solved the issue with using the sidewall of a truck tire for spacers and have not had any issues since. I am glad that you and your sister are safe.

Friends, there isn't a scratch on her except the bolts were severely bent on the right strut backet, tie-down loop was bent, and the bolt heads were ground off the rudder horn attachments. The rudder horn is bent a bit and thus I will replace it I left here in Virginia until I get a new right strut bracket, some new AN bolts, and a new rudder horn. I thought it best to drive back from Virginia anyway and let my nerves settle before I took back to the air.

I have included pictures of the plane where she rested and of the rubber spacers and aluminum brackets holding the sandwich together. The rubber is old -- I should have replaced it earlier. Could this rubber being old have caused this?

I replace the gear mount rubbers every annual with truck side walls like Bob, because I fly out of dirt strips most of the time. I also found that the cheese "L" bracket like yours didn't last very long either. So I replaced it with a piece of 1/2 thick 6060-T6 and that cured the bracket problem. With this maintenance program and the thick bracket I have had no problems for the last three years. I feel very secure now flying out of rough dirts strips.

Zenith has a urethane part for the UC cushions which does not rot.

This is what Caleb at Zenith wrote a few weeks back:

"We supply polyurethane blocks for the rubber spacers now, the part number is 7L2-2A/1. We use those blocks on both top and bottom. We have gotten a lot better life out of the polyurethane than we ever have using rubber. They should be a drop in replacement for the rubber that you have."

They are $6.50 each and you need four.
