AV8r3400,
I share your thoughts about the UL Field, when I had my 4 we would always
come into Oshkosh via the UL field, great bunch of people down at the barn,
donuts and coffee every morning for $1.50. I stopped in there on Friday and
to my surprise, donuts and coffee was still $1.50 and bottled water for $1.
It has been over 4 years now since flying in there but at that time it was a
blast, no tower, no radio chat, just call in ahead of time to make sure the
field was open and follow the NOTAM path staying below 300 agl, look for the
traffic pattern and fall into line to land. Very fun flying. At that time we
were able to camp under the wing and there was no camping fee, just pay to
get into AirVenture every morning, not sure how it is now. Met allot of
wonderful people at the UL field, sorry I missed you, maybe next year. Where
are you out of?

Sorry I missed you Lloyd. Mine was the yellow IV (with peeling flapperons)
at the UL field. I was thinking of putting my cell # on the prop tag, I
probably should have...

Though it can be a challenge to land on, I would encourage more of our
fraternity to fly in to the UL field. There is lots of fun to be had down
there and easy access. Plus you can go flying during the week...

--------
Thanks,
Av8r3400

I fly out of Merrill Wisconsin (KRRL).

Yes, you can still camp under the wing of your plane down there. Many people were doing this. We (my EAA Chapter, UL75) camp at the private campground across the street from the UL Red Barn.

Doughnuts are $1 and coffee is $.50 every morning. Flight briefings are 6.30 am and 5.30 pm in order to fly for that day. I usually got up for the 6.30 briefing, had my cuppa joe and a fat-boy pill, listened to the talk and got my wristband to be "legal" to fly all that day when the field is open fixed wing ops.

The pattern is tight and the field short, but our planes are capable of doing it.

1200' with a 300' over-run on each end.

It is on a slight bit of a hill, uphill to the northwest and downhill to the southeast.

The approach can be tricky, especially coming in from the north (Runway 15). You are making a right hand pattern and you have about a 200 yard final. In my plane with the round cowling and high panel it is virtually a blind turn, through a hole in the trees... Caused me to execute several go-rounds over the week.

Watch the videos here of how the pattern looks:
http://www.eaavideo.org/video.aspx?v=1604925137

This video is a little old and the trees have gotten bigger...
