It all started last winter when I developed a charlie horse in the back of my right thigh while flying to Seattle on United. Wouldn't go away, every time I got in the car it would come back. Finally curious, I went to my doctor in April. Arthritis in my back was her diagnosis, it just manifolds itself as muscle cramps in my right leg. I guess Bette Davis was right, getting old ain't for whimps. No other problems and it even seemed to ameliorate with time, a sort of ghost cramp, literally a pain in the a**. Three weeks ago I was cleaning out the basement and moving the guinea keets hatched by one of our hens, Ruffle Butt (the wife names the chickens) up to the coop. I could tell I had done something, but it wasn't obvious at first just a larger ache than I get while driving. It kept getting worse, by Sunday I was in the ER getting a muscle relaxer shot into my hip. Went to the doctor the next day, now it's a pinched nerve. Some pain relievers, muscle relaxers and some cortisone, the last two in shots and pills. Back in a week, reduced to pain relievers, percoset, and had an MRI the next day. Absolutely miserable, can walk, some, cannot stand still, sleeping in two hour stretches, I've about run through our DVD collection.
What has any of this to do with Kolbs, you ask? By last Saturday morning 2 am I just flat had it. Took a percoset knowing it would only help for about an hour and determined to suffer it out with some Aleve. By 7 am the pain was intense but the Aleve kept it to a loud roar. I pulled Zulu Delta out and hobbled about swearing and sweating while I fueled her up. My reasoning, what there was of it, anyway, was that if I could get in the plane I would take a one step at a time approach and if at any time I felt I couldn't control her I'd put away, otherwise, just how much worse could it get? Keep in mind that I live out in the country, the runway connects to my back yard and there's nothing but farm fields all around. To harm anyone but myself I'd have to work at it very seriously.
So anyway after the modified NASCAR entry, there I was in Zulu Delta's pilot seat and for the first time since this bout started I am pain free. No kidding, somehow the seat and the angle of the rudder pedals, all of it put together got my body into just the right position and like magic the pain is gone. The 582 started up and bumping along through my back yard presented no obstacles. Wind SW at one, maybe, not enough to bother taxiing a half mile to 17, I can handle a slight downwind. Nothing happened to make me turn back while the engine warmed up and I did my preflight. Half flaps, roll in the throttle and just like always, Zulu Delta flies herself off the runway. Still no pain, no problems. On the downwind at pattern height, the air is cool blowing in through all four cabin vents, and as smooth as glass. There's not a bump anywhere. No pain. Oxford's newly paved runway is nine miles south, I can make it that far. Oxford, too, is in the midst of farm fields. Still no pain, why not a touch and go? Two chirps and a rumble from the stock Kolb hockey puck tail wheel and I rolled her on three with half flaps. Throttle up and once again it's like auto pilot, she just flies herself off.
Okay, I'll cut this a bit shorter, I flew over to Wellington for a touch and go there, a couple of turns around my friend George's house. Hard to believe he's been gone over a year. Up to Selby's which was deserted, too early, and an IFR flight back through Mulvane along state route K15 and home. One whole hour without pain. It was wonderful.
I bet Travis, Denny and the guys don't know they build medical devices, but they built one for me.

Richard, you are so right about Homer's magic carpet doing wonders when it comes to health. In March I was diagnosed with cancer and told to go home and get my effects in order as I had as little as 3 to 4 months to live (a bit of a shock as I was working 16 hours a day and felt great). I changed doctors and cancer clinics and now undergoing heavy duty Chemo with a better outlook. To cover bills I have sold just about everything. My wife wouldn't let me sell the airplane I'd owned for years, unless I bought another one. I've always wanted a Kolb, so I bought a used KXP. The KXP is the best medicine I receive. Here's how I take it. Up at 04:30, two cups of coffee and then off to the airport. At daylight I'm taking my treatment. Usually only applied for about an hour before I have to return home. Once the treatment has been applied, it comforts me for the rest of the entire day. When I am too sick to leave my house, I spend my day reliving each of my flights. My wife says it weird to see me undergoing Chemo with a smile on my face.
I'm off to take my treatment

That' one of the major reasons I bought a Kolb (not the percoset) - reclined seats!
I deal with the same back pain as yours daily,
But not in my kolb!

Well, I guess I'm in good company, decrepit, but good :-}Gene, God bless you and get you well.
I applied my therapy again this morning, too, making a video for guys transitioning to Kolbs from GA and others. Tried to get good sight pictures landing with no, half, and full flaps. Forty five minutes of bliss.
