Nick and Buz,
I'm liking the Aussie tape explanation for Smokey's perceived elevator flutter.
Went roaring out of PHX solo in a turbo 310 doing its post-annual test flight years back... in a year the 400 series were regularly shedding empennage (turned out they needed trim tabs on both elevators, not just one). As I pushed over and accelerated toward 200 at cleared altitude, yoke became a thrashing blur and tailcone a buzzing megaphone. Pulled power and declared Big M rolling into the 180, getting the always welcome "cleared to land any runway any taxiway". Vibrations slowed in frequency and lessened in amplitude during the fully controlled turn and slow descent but remained perceptible into flare... which began with crash truck guys roaring alongside pointing and laughing at something I couldn't see from left seat. A long slender (like six feet by inches) starboard dorsal wing root aluminum fairing (engineered to reduce interference drag between wing and fuselage slab side) had peeled back and distorted airflow, I guess undulating same. It had been put back in place by one guy before lunch who inserted dozens of screws but hadn't finished torquing all down and didn't flag it. Chief glanced at area during lunch and signed and handed me the airplane. I poked and prodded the usual suspects, glanced there, and flew. Oops. Have brought along the Swiss Army or other multitool since.. to positively check and not just eyeball shyte like that at times like that.
