Hi everyone, I have a fox4 with a 582 C 3:1 GSC 68" and at cruising
RPM (5800-6000) EGT goes over 1200, any other rpm temp are 1100-1150.
Ground static 6200. Changed pitch to ground static 5900-6000.....same
problem. New needle 11G2,Change needle clip to last notch.....same problem.
Anybody had that problem before? Any idea or suggestion to what to look
for??
I wonder if a different prop would do the same thing? I'm thinking of
trying a warpdrive or IVO ultralight prop

Cheers

Richard

Richard,

Check Mike Stratman's artices on CPS website http://www.800-airwolf.com/articles.htm
He does a great job of explaning the interelation between prop pitch, RPMs, EGTs and jetting of the Bing carbs. Seems I recall that high RPM settings are controlled by the main jets. Your corrections to the jet needles would affect EGTs at mid-range RPMs. You might need the next richer main jets to get those numbers down.

I had the same problem for a long time with my 582 gray head, B gearbox, turning 3-bladed GSC ground adjustable prop. Tried all combinations of jet needle settings, jets, etc without satisfaction. The plugs always looked fine so I watched closely and kept on flying.

Mine was old enough such that I had to tap the exhaust manifold myself for EGT probe placement. Turns out I'd done it with the probes about an inch too far from the exhaust outlets where the temps are actually higher than at the recommended 38mm from the exhaust flange. I welded the old holes shut and tapped new ones and now my temps are comfortably down around 1000 deg (at) cruise of 5200 rpm or so.

I have the Arctic Sparrow in flight adjustable needles in my plane. The needles definitely will control the 5800 to 6000 RPM range for EGT temps. With the IVO 72" 3 blade set for 6500 RPM straight and level flight and 165 main jets at sea level I get EGT's around 1100 to 1120. When I pull the power back to 5800 for cruise I can tweak the EGT's up or down a couple hundred degrees with the needles. One turn is about the same as moving the clip one notch and will give about a 50 degree difference in EGT and about a .2 to .3 GPH fuel burn change.

What main jets are you running, and what are your RPM and EGT at WOT straight and level?

I experienced the exact same problem last winter when the temps started getting cooler. I also had the GSC prop and I never wanted to get ino trying to adjust it. I purchased a 72" IVO, I think medium, 3 blade and set it up for two blade with a spare. Not only did that solve my EGT problem but it was the single greatest all around mod I can imagine doing to that plane. Take off is still about 150' solo but with a little time in ground effect to get speed up and I can climb with the VSI pegged over 1000 fpm past pattern altitude. Cruise went up about 15 mph according to the ASI which is a little inaccurate. My only gripe is that now the plane is too fast in that the controls are a little heavier in roll.

I never would have believed it no matter how many times I was told before hand, but you will not regret replacing the 68" GSC! You will not believe how much of a difference the prop makes.

I would have never believed that EGTs could be affected by prop loading as much as they are until I watched an EAA webinar about 2-cycle engines last week. It is really worth watching.

Wurlybird,
Thanks for the good report "flying with the doors off" I still have to do that with my 4.
As for changes to your aircraft I have incorporated the following:
(1) bush gear..well worth it and lighter than the Grove although you probably won't find one used as they are too new.
(2) electric elevator trim..only way to go !!! really nice to be able to trim on approaches
(3) VG's...eeehhhh not so much. They help stabilize but not that big of a deal on my aircraft. Look cool though.
(4) gap seals..easy/cheap to do and do help with elevator authority

Interesting to hear you had such an increase in speed/climb from the IVO.It is rather hard to believe but guys on the TeamKitfox forum are reporting the same. Maybe one day I will "suck it up" and get one to see if it is true. I sure wish it was a prettier prop but then when you're flying, you can't see it anyway.
