I'm trying to decide whether to substitute camlocks, Skybolt equivalents, or something of that ilk for the screw/washer/nutplate method recommended by Zenith for attaching the top cowl to the lower cowl (Zenith-provided fiberglass version). The screw/nutplate method is great in terms of cost, weight, and pretty much everything else except convenience. I suspect if I had 1/4 turn fasteners, I'd be more apt to pop the top cowl and take a look around more often.
Anybody try using camlocks? If so, what series and how are you getting along with it in terms of security and wear?
Thanks...
John

For the last 35 yrs or so I've used Southco fasteners. They will be on my
701 as well. ACS and various supply houses have them.

I'm using wing nut Dzus fasteners on my cowl. I wouldn't call them easy to set up but wern't too bad. Trouble is that they are not very flexible when it comes to grip length. I've had to order a few different lengths to get ones that would work in all locations. At least with my old bed style mount cowl.

Hi John;
My FWF came from Jabiru USA and it included Camlocks to attach the upper cowl and nut plates for the lower cowl, I much prefer them to screws and nut plates for the upper cowl. There are four along each side and per the drawings four along the rear of the cowl. My advisor suggested that I add two more to the rear of the cowl, one either side of the plate that fits around the cabin front braces and on the top skin. It is also easier to remove the cowl as there are not loose parts. I have not finished my plane so I cannot give an opinion on wear etc. I have a Piper PA 28 which uses the same variety of Camlocks and they do not show any particular wear. Aircraft Spruce has all of the pieces. The receptacles are P/N 212-12N, the studs are P/N 2600-7 (my cowl is fiberglass and these are correct for it). The grip length needs to be adjusted depending on the total cowl thickness. The studs are held in place by an internally toothed washer P/N 2600-LW. Aircraft Spruce also caries Airlock and Southco both of which will do the job.
Regards, John
