Thanks for the helpful responses.

Next time you are in the market for a new computer, consider moving to a
Mac.

You are probably right about the Mac. I selected the PC because I have been
a PC computer programmer for many years- since shortly after they were
introduced in 1983. I know almost nothing about the Mac. With the PC I can
leverage my many years of headaches and frustrations I received thanks to
Gates. I *hate* windows. I will spare you the specifics. The only thing that
made it succeed was the huge momentum IBM and MS could impart to a new
product. Other competing GUI products were much more efficient and
trouble-free, back in the day. Have a few bones to pick with Apple too
though. I have tons of software and hardware for my PC's, along with my
years of experience, so I stick with it.

All for the want of a backing up routine. 20 years work down the Swannee

I'm sorry to hear abut that. If the computer industry was doing its job you
would not have had that happen. And thanks for the good advice, but you are
preaching to the choir. I have several current backups on various media,
both for my PC and my phone. I worked in City Hall Info Systems Dept as a
programmer/analyst for over 20 years, after years in the private sector as a
network consultant and programmer. At one time we had over a thousand
computers without an official backup program. Some departments had their own
of course. I asked my management for an official (supported) backup system
as it takes me about two weeks to rebuild my computer after a complete
failure. The rebuild software setup I mean (so I keep an extra workstation
set up ready to go in my cube). They said they were working on a city-wide
solution, so just wait. Instead I bought my own via the internet. Next
budget year, in their presentation to the Mayor and Council, my management
cited shopping the internet for the best prices as part of their policy. It
was my purchase they were referring to. They still have no policy or
city-wide system. I can say this because I am retired. 2-1/2 months so far.

Say what you will about windows but I am a self-taught programmer for my
businesses since 1980. In the late 80's I wrote a lot of programs in Visual
Basic 3 for windows 3.1. I am still running those same programs today in
windows 7. Even the dos programs I wrote in Qbasic still run, and I use a
couple of them every day. It is the bane and the boon of windows that it
always supports prior versions. No other operating system ever, has done
that. I still use VB3 for all my programming except for web pages.
