Hi All,
I am redoing all my antenna feed lines with rg142b/u , I removed the balun from
the nav antenna and noticed it was
corroded and decided to replace it.
I have found two ways to make a new one and would like your opinion on which
will work the best .
The balun shown in the best practices book has the core of the feed
line continuing around and into the short vertical part
with the shield from the feed line attached to one half of the antenna and the
shield of the short vertical to the other half of the antenna .
The other way I have found on the Internet is to cut the center core at the
bent and solder the core from the feed line to the shielding
on the short vertical then fasten this to one half of the antenna and
then fasten the shielding from the feed line to the other half of the antenna.
Any comments on the best approach will be appreciated .

Not sure of the antenna in question, or the exact method being used. Can you send me a picture at:
Mark.bitterlich(at)navy.mil please?
Using the term BALUN would imply a un-balanced to balanced feed, which indeed could be happening. If that is actually the case, then the LENGTH of some of these lines will be critical. Without a picture it is hard to guess, but taking a Wild A__ Guess ... I would imagine that there is a stub of unshielded center conductor in there someplace...
Anyway, if there is indeed some current transformation going on there, lengths will be critical SOMEPLACE or other. I know that's not much help, sorry. Maybe someone familier with your exact antenna design could help.. But failing that, if I knew what antenna you are working with, it might help.
