There is a 68" GSC hanging in my son's room as a decoration. That is all I felt it was really good for once I replaced it. As I said recently in another thread, it is worth every penny and then some to get a bigger ground adjustable prop, I went with a 72" IVO 2 blade. The 2 blades is more efficient and all around better performer. What I have been told is that every 2" of diameter is equal to about 10% increase in thrust. And being able to tune the prop by doing a pattern, landing at the approach end jump out and give it half a crank and try again is infinitely better then the method for adjusting a GSC!

I have tried a bunch of different props on my 582 Kitfox .
I never found much more than a few % difference in performance prop to prop. Keep in mind that I experimented and tweaked every prop to get max results.

GSC 68" narrow rip works well. harder to adjust for some.
Warp 68" SS leading edges square tip my favorite as it near in destructible in water , stones muds gravel and rain.

I have used IVO UL and medium with similar results to both props above.

IVO is a simpler prop to adjust I will say.

The only way you will get a 10 mph gain is to go from a less that perfect pitch prop to an ideal one.

On 912 Kitfox the IVO does perform much better than a gsc I will agree

I can concede that the GSC was less then perfect in pitch when I took it off to put on the IVO, that was the main reason I got the IVO. Performance was consistent with the GSC from spring to summer to fall and when winter came I just couldn't keep EGTs from pushing 1175-1200 indicated at 5800-6000. So it was not perfect in pitch. Where I have to disagree with you is that there will be marked differences when you start going from three blade to two blade props and start increasing prop diameter.

If I remember correctly (this is a crap shoot) 2 blade to 3 blade means greater pitch for the same static thrust which translates to higher cruise speed. Greater diameter means same pitch gives more static thrust and cruise stays the same.

So it is realistic to see an increase in cruise and climb going from a 68" 3 to a 72" 2. Also my 10 mph gain was "indicated" and I don't trust my ASI since I can push Vne in level flight at full throttle, doors off. So it is probably more like 6-7 mph if I calibrated it.

Glenn,

I've got a 66" 3 blade GSC ground adjustable available. I got it with my Model III with B gearbox. It's never been run and is in great shape.

Glen,
I'd be careful using a GSC prop if it is very old. The have an "age date" as well as hours in service limit. I had the following experience a couple years ago on a prop that to this day looks like it was never used. Date 4/5/2008.

"Dear friends,

Well it turns out I'm lucky to be alive. I was late leaving Buckeye, AZ and flew more that 6 hrs yesterday and had to land in Deming, NM because sun was about to set. This morning while doing a walk around on my Kitfox III ,before the final leg home, I found that the blades were loose (3 blade ground adjustable GSC prop). One blade was so loose I turned it by hand. It had an annual the day I bought by a Phoenix Kitfox guru. I suspect it must have been loose when I left AZ but I never checked as it was not on my checklist. Of course my instructor always had me check the 172's prop when I was getting my bi-annual but I did not think to do that since the motor on the Kitfox had not been run since the annual 4 days earlier.

What saved my life, I am sure, is that the prop was overpitched and all I could get was 4200 rpm. The Rotax 912 is supposed to get better than 5500 rpm and has a gear reduction. Because I am such a skilled pilot, (read stupid) I accepted the performance reduction in the interest of getting home. I'm sure that if the prop had turned up to 5500 rpm I would not need an aircraft in order to fly. Well assuming I made it to heaven.

Thank the Good Lord for looking after us fools."

Pete
