I'm finally ready to do this, but do not understand the logic in placing the arm at the aileron's extreme tip. Is there a downside to moving it inboard, say, 100mn? Clarity on this would be much appreciated.

Hi Elden,
Well, one consideration is the large hole you need to make in the rear channel to allow the balance arm into the wing cavity. I suppose the weakening of this primary structural element is less significant near the wing tip.
Also, in the case of the aileron which contains the trim motor and tab there isn't room for the new ribs in the middle of the aileron.
One other little point: This is the design that was reviewed by the FAA engineers for thousands of man-hours. If you make a significant change you need to duplicate that effort to determine your new design is at least as good as the one that was approved. It seems a lot easier to just follow the design released to us.

You need to move it 100 mm inboard if you angle the new ribs (per plans) however Zenith placed there new ribs at 90 degrees from the trailing edge and if you do that it will work also.
Either way isn't (per plans) so the choice is yours. I move all my arms inboard 100 mm and haven't had any problems.
One other note is if you have hinged ailerons you will have about 5 or 6 extra weights and your bolts will be too long. I haven't heard anyone else address this issue but I now have enough extra weights for another upgrade.

It's also much easier to service the aileron balance in the future with the
arm in it's published location. I plan to paint the wings and ailerons, and
do the final balance thru an access door in the outboard rib.
