Lost a steering spring last night, scary!! I am looking for pictures and advice on the setup so I can optimize the setup when I assemble new parts.

On my previous attempt I used two stretch springs that were on the aircraft when I got it, I notice most of the setups I have seen use compression springs.

Anyway, I want to do it the best way I can so I'll take whatever advise I can get, thanks.

I have the stretch springs and never had a problem with them. You do need to bend both ends of those springs so there is absolutely no way for them to come unhooked. Here's a link to a video on set up.

I had the same problem a couple of times. I will never go back to extension springs.

I got a compression spring kit from Spruce for ~$25. Best investment ever. It is impossible for the springs to come off now. The only trick is to keep the chains tight and be sure your ruder stops are set properly as to not allow the tailwheel to unlock too easily. Both of these are issues I am still working on...

I replaced my steering springs today with the way overpriced Maule set from ACS.

No need for any chain if you follow the setup instructions, (one link of you want them looser than specified). The results are quite good, with around 3/4" of pretension the tailwheel is quite responsive, and kicks out much easier than before.

you might also try using the MATCO optional 25 degree 'release' bars vs the standard 45 degree 'release' bars.
