Hi all, another quick question!
Is it considered to be either a/ mandatory, b/ highly recommended, c/ quite nice to do, or d/ totally unnecessary, to fit drip trays/ heat shields to the Rotax carbs?
I'm in the process of fitting a secondhand Rotax 912 ULS to my machine (as a replacement for an alternative engine type that was previously installed). My "new" engine in it's previous life did not have these fitted and just had the standard cone shaped air filters. It does have the Skydrive coolant-heated carb heaters fitted to the carbs.
If the concensus of opinion is that I should have these drip trays fitted then are the ones supplied by Rotax suitable/ good to use, or is there a better alternative available?

I think you may find that if you have the carb heating kit the drip trays may not fit.

A heat shield below the carb bowls is not essential but highly desirable. Otherwise the fuel will boil when taxiing on a hot day.You can easily make them yourself out of something like firewall material with a small aluminum bracket, which is attached to the top bolt of the exhaust pipe.

I bought the Rotax carb drip bowls but unfortunately also bought the carb heater kit (runs radiator water around the engine side of the carb through a maniford that moves the carbs about ¾” back – and the Rotax carb drip bowls don’t fit – I attempted to cut it a bit to make it fit but no luck. I then made up trays myself out of aluminum. I have pictures if anyone wants them.
I live in the Northeast and icing is an issue – so I felt the heater kit was a necessity.

Hi Jon,
We have a 912S in a mono-wheel XS, and found on occassion we were getting vapor lock, due to heating of the carbs by the rear exhaust pipes, just as they come out of the heads. We cured this by wrapping the carb bowls and fuel lines in that area with a heat shield material, which is an eighth inch thick insulating fabric that has an aluminum covering. We used aluminum tape to keep it in place.

Many thanks for the advice, much appreciated - especially those who have told me the Rotax drip trays don't fit with the carb heaters fitted - you've saved me quite a few quid!!

John,
There are two reasons for drip trays:
1. shielding the heat radiated by the exhaust pipes which may cause
the fuel to boil in the carb bowls.
2. allowing fuel possibly leaking form the carbs to be drained below
the engine, instead of being ignited by the red hot exhaust.
Although the normally aspirated 912 and 912S carbs usually do not leak
(unlike the 914's which are leaking almost all the time due to the
boost pressure) I think it is good practice to have drip trays
installed that insure these two functions.
However I do not recommand to install the Rotax drip trays which bolt
to the carb rubber flange as:
1. They de not fit with the hot coolant carb heat system
2. They do not allow to remove the carb bowl for inspection unless you
remove the carbs, making servicing more time consuming.
One solution is to make your own aluminum drip trays and have them
bolted to the airbox using anchor nuts for easy removal.
