I remember reading a few things but several list searches have turned up nada. I would like to fit my Model 3 with a smooth cowl and I am trying to figure out the best method.
I have heard that a smooth cowl for a Model 4 can be made to fit. I am still waiting to hear back from the McBs as to whether these are still available or not.
I have gotten with Brett from Airdale and he has a really nice looking cowl for an Avid Mk 4 that he says should fit with little work. I am just not sure as to the fit and overall dimensions.
So has anyone had any experience with either of these approaches? Any other ideas come to mind? I should also note that the smooth cowl would be the cherry on top if I go ahead and switch to an HKS engine, which will have a slightly higher thrust line then a 582.

James-
Granted that mine is a model IV, but I used a Skyfox cowl (an
Australian knock-off of a Kitfox) that I bought from my Jabiru dealer
in Tennessee, Pete Krotje....Jabiru USA. I don't know if they are
still available, but they fit with a bit of work (the area that meets
up with the windshield is the biggest problem). Also, Dave Jalanti at
Jabiru Power Solutions.com ((www.jabirups.com)) was the guy who first
did this cowl adaptation, and wrote an article (and has a DVD
covering that work) in Kitplanes Magazine back in 2001, I think if was.

Hey Lynn, do you have some pictures of your plane, specifically the front, that you could either post or email me? Thanks. Let me know if you want my email address.

James-
I just sent two pics to your "(at) us.army.mil" address. I can post here
if they don't show up soon. The file was about 1.5 Meg, so I didn't
want to post here if not necessary. I also have a few pics of the
cowl-to-windshield area, that I took during the "surgery", which
requires the most work needed to make it fit a non-Skyfox application.

I picked up an Avid MK IV cowl for my Kitfox 4. It is a lot lower over the prop than the round cowl and has to be easyier to see over on landing. It will need to be added to in order to meet the windshield and back to the doors, but I've done some fiberglass work before, ( built a complete cowl) so I'm not afraid of modifieing it. Not sure if the Jabiru cowl would do what you need with the 582 or not. The MK IV cowl was designed for the 582 to begin with. Firewall width on my MK IV and the Kitfox 4 are the same, so all of that should work. Kitfox's smooth cowl for the Kitfox 4 would be the least work I'm thinking, but at times I've seen MK IV cowl for $200-$250 used. I paid Brett $225 for mine and it has the large opening below the prop for the radiator to mount there with the 912 engine. Take care, Jim Chuk Avids, Kitfox 4 (building, all fabric painted and set to the side) Mn
