Hi all,

I’m wondering whether anyone has had any snags with the ‘new’ Ampreg 21 as opposed to the ‘old ‘Ampreg 20’ when used in the surface finishing mode?

I’ve never had a problem with Ampreg 20, either on my first Europa, nor up to half way through the build of my second. However, I ran out of ‘20’ and have started using Europa supplied ‘21’ and find the ‘21’ based filler horrible to sand …….. it clogs every sanding paper I try, Permagrit tools included.

I am using:-

<![if !supportLists]>·   <![endif]>the same filler, Europa supplied, same batch even.

<![if !supportLists]>·   <![endif]>I add of the other powder (sorry, can’t remember the name) to make it smooth more easily in exactly the same proportions as before.

<![if !supportLists]>·   <![endif]>the right mix – ‘20’ is 100:25. ‘21’ is 3:1.

<![if !supportLists]>·   <![endif]>the workshop is heat soaked and dry, dry, dry …….. I even tried higher than usual workshop temps.

<![if !supportLists]>·   <![endif]>I keep the workshop warm for at least 12 hours after application and after that the workshop has burst of heat which keep it well above current outside air temperature, which is about 17C.

I am aware SP have a very good Helpline, but thought I’d see if anyone else has had the same problem first.

a lot of people use West system for finishing, sands easier and cures quicker. I always add Cabosil which allows more expancell to be added and causes less pinholes. ratio 1 cabosil :5 expancell by volume.

I use SP106 for surface work. A lot less sticky than Ampreg20.

I had exactly the same situation. Luckily the structural work was finished with Ampreg 20 but for some of the finishing I used Ampreg 21.

I found the same issues as yourself. The only way to improve things that I found was to wet sand or post cure the component before sanding.

I only had a small amount left to do but if I was to do this again I would try another resin. It needs checking but I believe for the filling operations you can use whatever resin you like.

I used Superfil from Poly Fiber Aircraft Coatings http://www.polyfiber.com/step/ 
It is not far off half the weight and very easy to sand. It also bonds to itself well so that constant additions work. One clonk of the Permagrit or sand paper and it is ready to go again.
It also dries fast so is ready to sand at the following day (given a good temp and dry air which during a Scottish winter meant using a heater and dehumidifier).
The sanding process was huge as we made the Classic wings from starting from foam shapes. The Superfil made it a lot more pleasant and the aircraft weighed a lot less at the end.
We did it ourselves using their entire Top Gloss paint system to very good effect.
