hi all I built a plane in the mid 80's and used 20 in bicycle wheels. had them custom spoked to a mini bike hub with breaks and larger spokes. flew the heck out of this plane. it was a wing warp design and I had lots of x wind landings

I've been thinking about bicycle wheels for the biplane I'm designing.
One idea I had was to sandwich two hubs together and respoke the
wheels to get more side support.

OTOH the new Schwinn Stingray bikes (nothing like the one I had as a
kid) has a real fat rear wheel. but I doubt it'd be adequate for
anything heavier than a true ultralight.

Dana, other spoke enthusiasts, 
 
  With a little bit of research, there are probably dozens of likely candidates that
would work very well for use on a plane.  There are lots of scooters, mini motorcycles,
and the like, that would probably work well.  Most of these will comes with some kind
of disc brake set-up.   With diameter from 12" to 20+", a guy could easily come up with
a set of olden-day looking spoked wheels.
 
  Personally, I can't really picture a Kolb wearing a set of spoked wheels.  The style doesn't
make me think of "early 1900's airplanes.  Maybe after seeing a Kolb with them, I'd see what
Rick is getting at.
 
  For the relatively low touchdown speed, I don't think the side-load issue is a major
consideration.  I think a 20" spoked Honda scooter front wheel would be plenty robust to
handle routine landings.
  I want to see what a Kolb looks like with spoked wheels, even if it's only a mock-up.

For the relatively low touchdown speed, I don't think the side-load issue is a major
consideration. I think a 20" spoked Honda scooter front wheel would be plenty robust to
handle routine landings.

For you Kids who are to young to remember, back in the early 1930's many cars had wire wheels. They were a big upgrade from some of the wooden spooked wheels.

After I sold this plane the new owner ground looped it at high speed, bent a wing tip  and scrubbed the gear clean off the plane….. after all that the wheels straight and true
