Weird thing happened this evening. I'm assembling and fitting the subpanel and fwd fuse ribs. Everything has been going together very nicely and I'm feeling good. Put the 7 deg bend in the subpanel, match drill it to the angles and ribs, cleco it all together, and put it in the airplane. It doesn't come close to fitting. Photos attached. ribs sit too high and don't reach the firewall. It is like I have the wrong ribs. ????? I would bet that I'm overlooking something simple, but after looking at the plans for a long time, I can't figure out what it is. I'll call Van's next week, but till then, any ideas?

Weird... would be good to see a couple pics of where that upper forward fuse assembly is clecoed to the rest of the fuselage.

I agree with Rob. The ribs are ok, but it does appear that there may be a problem with mounting the sub panel. Without pictures of the other locations where the subpanel attaches to the panel, it’s difficult to tell where the issue may be.

I'd try putting the skin on and see if it helps align things. It would seem to me that the problem is in the sub-panel bend angle, maybe, which is keeping the ribs from witting where they need to for the firewall attachment. I usually cleco and rivet that structure to the skin off the plane and then install it as one piece. You might want to try that with clecos and see if that helps with the alignment. Adding the skin to the mix will help confirm whether you have the right parts or something is wrong.

The top of the firewall is bent forward. I don't see this in your photos. Might be part of your alignment problem?

Andy,

You need to cleco the ribs to the firewall, it will pull everything
together and create the slope that is made by the forward fuse.

Ron and John, you got it. I thought the firewall was flat. If I allow the upper firewall to bend forward, it fits fine. Duh.

Thanks, -A
