I recently noticed that the centerline of my Jabiru 2200A was pointing downward a degree or so, relative to the longitudinal centerline of my 701. I have ordered new rubber motor mounts from Jabiru USA as the existing mounts are showing some surface cracks and generally are sagging.
The question I have is what if any advantage would there be to shim the centerline of thrust to any angle other than parallel to the centerline of the plane as seen from the side view. When viewed from above I have the required 3 degrees, (23 mm measured at the back of the engine), of offset thrust to the passenger side. Just curious if anyone running the same combination might have experimented with the thrust centerline in any way. Pro's Con's ?/

The engine mount fro my 701 looks "crooked" when you look along it with
reference to the airplane. I checked into it and its supposed to be that
way. It is built to counteract torque from the engine, and/or ?P factor or
whatever. But first time I noticed this I though the thing was made wrong!
If I remember, I think the engine mount pointed down a bit and maybe a hair
to the right?? Can't recall for sure.
Don't know about the Jabiru though, or whether messing with shims might do
more harm than good. When I called about my Rotax mount they said it was
designed especially for all the forces of the full throttle engine, and was
supposed to be that way.

It is my opinion that Chris designs all his planes using a tried and true method. A simple way to counteract P force and to get the plane to fly decent he adds offset to the engine mounts.
Here is a link to the 801 thrust line drawing. I bet it is similar to all his designs, especially the 701.

Don. I agree the 3° to the right is normal. The 1° down...Never heard of it. Ive been on these Matronics lists for a long time........Geoff

I plan to purchase a digital protractor today to see how far nose down the engine is relative to the fuselage. Always wanted one those, now I have a good excuse. Thanks for the drawing Ben, interesting to see they allow a 5 degree tolerance + or -, that is surprising. One can only imagine how she would fly thrust up, or thrust downward 5 degrees.
Jabiru USA is out of rubber engine mounts and I will have to wait literally for a slow boat from Australia. My mounts are sagged a bit and a few are showing small surface cracks......Don

Down a degree is OK. I had to mess around with the washers between the mount rubber inserts.

After removing the motor mount nuts and lifting the motor slightly, I took notice that the rubber mounts were permanently deformed downward where the engine frame tubes poke through. So, I sprayed some soapy water on the rubbers and rotated them half a turn then snugged everything up till the new rubbers come in. The engine is now 0 to 1/2 degree nose up relative to the fuselage centerline. P-factor angle was dead on. ...... Don
