I've been chasing after this infor for a while and just in case I am missing
some part of the story is unleaded, stable fuel still a dream. It seems like
in a very small market they are held up for a very small segment. The high
performance piston engine crowd which as I understand it can barely tolerate
100LL are the major stumbling block. Most of us could get by with alchohol
free unleaded aviation fuel with octane ratings in the low-mid 90's. Lets
get it in the pumps and stop having to monkey around with making our own
fuels.

Per the article I read in (I think) AOPA 100LL without the lead would be 94UL.

Unfortunately over 75% of the aircraft fleet (us) only uses less than 25% of the 100LL produced. The majority of the 100LL used is in high performance singles and twins. These users cannot tolerate 94UL without major modifications to their engines along with significant, unacceptable, decreases in performance.

Again, here is where the FAA is blocking any significant research by Gami and others by not granting STCs to conduct larger scale tests of other potential fuels.
