 I am thinking of building a Lancair ES. In fact, I have been evaluating a  partially built kit that is for sale. 

  

 I'm wondering what is the smallest engine that has been successfully used  and what climb, cruise and economy that could be expected from it.

  

 Also, how well does the ES fly. Are there any little quirks with the ES  that is a concern? How difficult is it to get used to the side  sticks?

  

 Can anyone advise me?

Gary,



I have a kit (mostly completed) for sale.



The ES was originally designed for the Cont. 360 (210 HP)..  Many were built. and fly well. Some folks have put Lycomings in (6 cyl.) and they do well too.



With the IO-550, you can run lean of peak on less than 12 gph at 180-185 knots.

Gary,  

Building a plane is not just exactly like selling one and buying another…you will probably be without a plane to fly for several years if you sell then build.  The best build plans have a way of life getting in the way of them.  If you can get a good deal, I recommend that you find a kit partially completed and look at it very carefully to see if it is done with quality so you want have to redo anything.

I am just a lurker as I fly Diamond, not Lancair at the moment (even

if the Evolution still remains my dream plane from all the kits out

there), so short comment from the usual silence:

We have traditional stick in Diamond and then I have also flown with

side stick Cirrus SR20 and SR22.

The Cirrus side stick has pretty springy feel (which may not be the

case with Lancair, Cirrus control feel is kind

of unique as far as I know) which makes it not so ideal, but anyhow

getting used to the

side stick part took maybe the first 15 minutes of the first

familiarization flight. Not very big deal.



For the feel and accuracy of the control I prefer the Diamond-style

stick but for the cockpit space and freedom,

the side stick is very good. On our N. Atlantic crossing trip with the

immersion suits on it would have been

a bit more comfortable with a side stick controlled plane than it was

with the Diamond. I think yoke is not to be discussed as who

wants to drive with a yoke anyway.

Cirrus is really a side yoke (not a side stick).  Although it only has one

"ear/handle", it still slides in/out, versus pivoting.  

Furthermore, Cirrus Elevator/pitch and Aileron/roll controls are all cable

driven (hence the springy/sloppy feel).



Side stick (Lancair/Columbia) was comfortable for me in about 10 min.  I

wouldn't have it any other way.



Think about it this way: you're often flying with one hand anyway - Right

hand on the throttle during take-off, most of approach, and doing everything

else (radios, flaps, etc).

 It sounds like getting used to the side stick is no big thing. I have flown  three airplanes with center sticks and I prefer the center stick over the  yoke I now fly in my Archer III.

Frankly, that site is not the most followed/active.

15,000 past emails, pictures, etc - all from ES builders/flyers/etc

We typically have an informal ES builder/flyer dinner there (in addition to anything Lancair does).  

Pretty good group, and the experienced builder/flyers have been very gracious with their learning’s.  

There’s lots of help/insight available.
