|
|
Hi,
My group (in the UK) is thinking about buying a 10 year old Kis Tr-1
with an 024 engine. Any input on what to look for and what to avoid
(weak spots, problem areas etc) would be appreciated. Also does anyone
know where I can find data on short field performance, fuel consumption
and general handling etc ?
Many Thanks (in advance)
Bob

Hello Bob,
My TR-1 has the IO-240 B1B with 400+ hrs. I burn a little under 6 gph at
cruise at 165 mph.I wouldn't consider it to be a great short field performer
at gross wt. Mine is 1550#. There is a lot of information in the KIS-list
archives.

I think the TR1 you are looking at is the one built by Ray Clegg and Ray is
a superb builder and very precise ( he went on to build the KIS Cruiser
4 place and a diesel powered RV7 ). if so, then it is fitted with a much
stronger nose gear of Rays own design . The nose gear on early models had
some problems particularly on hard landings with a cross wind .
other than that i do not believe there are any other problem areas , on the
plane itself, except there are no spare parts available anymore and very
limited factory support available,
Quote: | From my own point of view , the KIS is not a short field lander , and my
personal limit is nothing at all shorter than 500m . Mine has a very sharp
|
wing drop and a 200 ft plus recovery when it eventually stalls so i tend to
come in with a bit more speed than is perhaps absolutely necessary.
As far as performance figures are concerned there are only a limited number
of KIS 2 places available and not many with the same engine / prop
combination , but mine which has the IO240 B and a wooden fixed pitch, it
cruises at 125 kts on 21 litres / hour and flat out 165 kts burns
maybe 40 plus .
handling in the air , mine flys mostly hands free, but is sensitive to
the fuel load in each wing, it is sensitive in pitch , and it picks up speed
rapidly when the nose is pointed down ,
It is definitely not a plane for a very low time pilot , , even after 8
years and 350 hours i still can not make a consistent good landing

Hi George and everyone else,
Ray built G-BVZD which we now own and as was commented on, a very exacting builder he is. ZD has a very strong oleo noseleg and doesnt seem to suffer from fuel seepage from the tanks.

George
you are quite right, Ray built G-BVZD ( the KIS two place ) then G-BYZD (
Kis 4 place ) and then G-CCZD ( RV7 diesel) not sure what he is building
now , but it will be a good one and know doubt will have a registration
G-??ZD.
I do not know if that is the one that this group are thinking of buying ,but
i heard that it was for sale and there are not many of them in the UK so I
put 2 +2 together and got 5.
Keith.
