I've been have interference problem with my hand held Icom A24 to the point that is almost useless. I called Jim over at Jabiru Pacific and he informed me that hand held radios can't be used with the Jab engines and there is no fix other than installing a good panel mounted radio. Apparently its an issue with the mags I think. My question is has anybody else experienced this problem? The radio works well with engine not running. but once running the receive and transmits are full static and garbled. I have the radio mounted to the panel with a external antenna. Anybody got any ideas.

Hey Dan: I had to use my ICOM hand held for a trip to TN (from central FL) and back. I noticed the same problem, and was able to solve it by setting the squelch up to 8 and then I did not notice so much noise when I spoke to a fairly close stations. I kept the hand held hooked up to my head set. I do not think I could have used it without the head set.

Dan,

I have used my ICOM A22 handheld radio recently in my Lightning with
Jabiru 3300 because my panel radios have been sent back to Garmin for a
service bulletin. Although I can transmit and receive clearly, there is a
good bit of static noise all the time. So it's useable but annoying.

Dan,
I also have a handheld, a Icom A20, but don't have any problem with
interference. I have it installed between the seats and also connected to
the external antennae up where the cabin meets the flap, far away from
elctric instruments and coils. Thus the wing and fuselage structure form a
big base for the antennae. I also have the radio connected to the
Commtronics Intercom which is connected directly to the battery. I hope this
helps.

Regards Dieter

Dan,

If you claim that the static interferes with your transmissions as well
then I must assume you have the Icom connected to ships power or the
interference is entering the radio through your headset cord. Try
putting a ferrite on the headset cable, as close to the radio as you
can. MGL sells a good one under the name "EMI Interference Suppressor",
you can find it on their site under Accessories.

If you have it running on ships power, disconnect it and see how it
works on the battery. If the interference is gone, get a good power
filter for your main buss to power the radio.

Dan,
I have a 3300 in a Zenith 601XL. While I have a panel mount radio,
I have used a Sport's hand held with its rubber ducky antenna. With the
hand held, it has been able to receive any control tower that can hear
me. Not as good as using the belly mounted antenna with a panel mount
radio but usable.
One thing I am surprised at is the noise in transmit mode. Are you
sure this is not microphone pickup?
Technically, if the hand held is not electrically connected to
anything (including the phone jacks for earphones) but the antenna, then
the only way for noise to get in is through the antenna. With a fabric
covered aircraft, it is very hard to stop engine noise from getting into
the antenna other then physical separation (tail mounted??). I assume
you do have the antenna at least well connected to the aircraft frame.
The Jabiru ignition is apparently a good noise generator. With a
fabric covered aircraft, I would expect the noise issue to be worse.
There have been some suggestions in the archives about reducing the
noise. Apparently most of it comes directly from the mags and can only
be reduced by replacing the "non replaceable" ignition wire coming out
of the mags with a noise suppression wire. This has been described in
the archives.

Dan:

How are you powering the A24?
If you are plugging into a cigarette jack you need to install a shielded power line and a choke in series with the B+ and a Cap from the B+ to Ground.  Make the Choke about 500 mH to 1 H and the Cap about 47K uF (at) 16 WVDC or more.

Also - Are you using shielded spark plug wires or resistive plugs?

Barry, I have the radio powered by its own battery, I also have a power adapter that plugs into the power port in and its supposed to be filtered. The spark plug wires and spark plugs are original Jabiru so I don't know what they are.

Seems putting a choke on each mag to distributor wire did the trick

They were TDK 100-150 MHz ferrite beads, snap on. I also put one on the antenna cable near the Icom. Not sure it helped though.
