Getting ready for my airworthiness inspection. Curious as where others have mounted their data plate. I'm thinking about putting on the aft part of the fuselage tube, back by the tail feathers.

In my case the inspector said the reason the manual calls for it to be
somewhere in the tail section is because in a lot of crashes that is the
only thing left in case of fire or something like that. Bill

The idea of the data plate being metal is that it will survive anywhere.

Pat, all, this is the FAR that concerns the aircraft identification plate:

5.11   Marking of products.
(a) Aircraft . A manufacturer of aircraft covered under §21.182 of this chapter must mark each aircraft by attaching a fireproof identification plate that—
(1) Includes the information specified in §45.13 using an approved method of fireproof marking;
(2) Must be secured in such a manner that it will not likely be defaced or removed during normal service, or lost or destroyed in an accident; and
(3) Except as provided in paragraphs (d) through (h) of this section, must be secured to the aircraft fuselage exterior so that it is legible to a person on the ground, and must be either adjacent to and aft of the rear-most entrance door or on the fuselage surface near the tail surfaces.

Hi Richard,
interesting. I don`t think that I have ever seen a written spec. about the plate placement. Main thing is that it is likely to survive a crash. What is on the plate is specified of course.

Pat, I don't know about the validity of the story, but what I've been told by several, including the FAA inspector who issued the Airworthiness Certificate for my Firestar, that this data plate was mandated following a request from the DEA. So many planes were being stolen in Florida and surrounding states to be used for drug running and then crashed in the Everglades that they needed a way to determine ownership of the aircraft without having to bring in heavy equipment to dig it out. Hence the request that the plate be put behind the rear most loading door or near the tail.

I don't know about the validity >>

Interesting. I don`t think there are any records here of smuggling by ulralight from France. More likely to be Pakistanis, Indians or other alien.
