I just started flying again after my move to TX and it's hot! My temps were
so solid until now at 190 water (200 after climb) and 220 oil (230 climb)
even on hot days in RI and the whole flight thru FL to TX. Even taxiing at
Oshkosh for a half hour in the heat was fine a couple years ago. Now I'm
seeing 220 water and 240 oil, and a bit higher during climbout. Time to
rework my cooling system? Remove 50/50 water/antifreeze and use 100%
distilled water? Try Evans NPG? Finish my duct and enclose back of rad
(exit duct)? Not sure if this is too hot to continue flying but it's a
bummer after all that work and thinking I had it licked. I do need to check
the jetting and remove my cabin heater core, and I repitched prop to climb
so it's running higher rpm too. A good test will be to take the doors off
and put the heat on - maybe airflow thru the heater core aids cooling and by
not having airflow thru it makes it worse. Maybe removing it will actually
help? It's circulating right now but returning almost the same temp water.
If I take it out, all the coolant will run thru the radiator and be cooled.
My water temp is measured going to the heater core now so I'd keep the
sensor in the bypass hose which should still be a good place to measure
temp, right? Oh well, I'll play around this week and see what happens.
