Hi Gaggle:

I am looking at a CH601XL for purchase.  I'm learning from the collective but, I do not feel I have enough information or knowledge to perform my own Pre-Purchase.
Are there and Documents / Safety Inspection forms to guide me through?

How would you suggest I go through the steps of inspection this plane and VERIFYING that ALL the Service Bulletins are complied with.  The owner states the plane is in compliance with MOD B.  How do I go about verifying that?

This is the BIGGIE - This is the Big Step.
Thanks Gaggle.

If he has done the B mod then he has the plans for it from Zenith. You can go through the plans page by page with him. Hopefully he took photos before he closed the wings up.

Barry,

Your post begs a couple of questions: 1) Are you a member of a local EAA chapter? And 2) Where are you located?

As Experimental Kool Aid Drinkers we often forget that others in aviation don’t share our love and more importantly our trust of ANY DESIGN or AIRPLANE in the experimental world.

I believe the phrase of swimming uphill and such accurately describes getting most FSDO’s involved in either the inspection process or flying in an experimental design for certification flights.

I attended an EAA Workshop a few weeks ago and the instructor told me of his experience with getting his plane signed off by the local FSDO. They wanted every item in the builder’s log signed and dated like it was the engine/airframe log kept to certificated standards. In contrast, my DAR barely even looked at my builder’s log as it was obvious that I had built my plane. I’ve seen/heard similar nitpicking from other builders as well when dealing with the FSDO.

The thing that I came away with on all this is that whenever possible avoid the FSDO if at all possible. Don’t get me wrong, they aren’t bad, evil people or anything like that; they just view the world differently.

Don

One thing you can do is to open the bell crank inspection covers and look fwd to the top of the spar and see how the driven rivets look. If they look bad I wouldn't buy the plane. Also look at the bell crank itself and see that it is attached solid i.e.: no double drilling or sloppy holes. I would also look in the fuel tank access covers at the workmanship of the nose ribs and the root doubler.

I am going Friday to look at a newly purchased 601xlb that had some issues on the way to the new owners airport I am not sure if it was pilot error or bad rigging but the plane got inverted at about 600 feet and thank God no one was killed but it had the upgrade and I think that is a testament to the new strength of the 601/650 I will be looking for structural damage and re rigging the aircraft before bringing it back for a 100% inspection. I am only telling you this so you are aware of the hidden things you should look for so take a mirror and a flashlight and ask a ton of questions and if you still feel uneasy get someone else to inspect it for you.

Jeff

Hi Don,

I was at a meeting with some high level FAA folks last week and asked about the choices I could/should make about getting my XL inspected. The big point was to contact my local MIDO rather than FSDO. The MIDO folks are in the airplane inspection business along with other related stuff like factory inspections. FSDO are mostly about pilot stuff but also can do experimental inspections.

I was told to call the MIDO and that they might offer to inspect it (with some schedule delay) or suggest a DAR to do the job for them. Apparently the DARs all report to their local MIDO.

Barry,

I strongly suggest you get someone familiar with the 601XL to help you with an inspection. See if you can contact Phil Maxson. He has built and flies a great 601XL. He might be able to help or guide you to someone who can. You might also ask around your EAA chapters to see if anyone can help.

Jay

Barry,

I'd be happy to help with the pre-purchase inspection if the plane is near by our area.  It would be pretty easy to tell if the buyer has installed each of the upgrade components and to give a general appraisal of the workmanship.  I'll be working on the hangar this weekend and early next week so give me a call if I can help.
