Hi John,
Not yet. As you may recall.....a looong time ago, I had the engine/prop 100%
finished. Turn the key, and she starts right up. This was the normally aspirated
1.0L GEO motor, IvoProp 3 blade, electric in-flight adjustable prop. ( I know you know
my engine prop details, the additional info is for new guys).
Then, "THE CHANGE". GEO motor gets a new custom installed turbo, and mild
race cam, for better turbo breathing, and a reworked timing pulley. IvoProp stays
the same, (except for new current limiter circuit I built from the Aeroelectric list--
which lights an LED at near max current, instead of popping the circuit breaker).
Since my engine requires several electronic goodies, (boost gage, AFR gage,
EGT gage, tach, etc, etc) and all these things need to be finished, installed
and functioning fully, I have to complete my panels (both overhead and front
panel/radio console) prior to firing up the engine.
Lately, I've been building the three electronic circuits that go into the plane;
the IvoProp current limiter circuit, the trim tab LED indicator circuit, and the
Dynon AOA alarm detector LED circuit.
The Dynon AOA circuit is done, just needs to be installed. The trim tab
circuit is on the electronic breadboard being built today, and the Ivoprop circuit
is finished, just needs to be checked out.
Once I finish the last circuit today, I can install the three of them into the front panel,
which is completely finished, and install it into the plane (which already has the
mounts done)
Here is a picture of my "powered up" overhead panel. It is the central electric
source for the plane. It has all the master avionics switch, light switches, circuit
breakers, ignition switch, etc. I have to add a couple of things not shown in the
photo. All the LEDs are lit up, showing they are correctly wired. I also have the
wiring harness plugged into the fully finished front panel.
In a nutshell, the engine is close to being fired up. I'm just trying to get all the
instruments installed first. The engine itself, is done, just waiting on the turn of
the key.
I hear a soldering iron calling me...gotta run.

John,
Busy?? Yeah, I guess you could say that.
Some guys build planes as stripped as they can. They only want
the bare essentials, and not an ounce more, and this is ok.
Some guys build planes with lots of bells and whistles, the more the merrier.
They opt for more doo-dads, lights, switches and what-nots. I'm more in this
catagory. "To each his own", as the saying goes.
But what is most important is; we get to build what WE want. The
(remaining) freedoms we have in this country allows us all to build our
own plane, whether they be stripped as a kite, or crammed full of crap.
In "experimental" airplanes, we can truly say "I did it MY way!!"

Didn't intend to get you stirred up.
Was only interested in how the engine/redrive project was progressing.
I fully understand we have a lot of freedom in how we build our airplanes in the US.
I guess I am from the other side of the spectrum. I try not to put anything into my airplane that is not necessary for safe and comfortable flight. The more stuff I cram in there, the more stuff can go wrong. As it is, when something fails/goes wrong, I am uncomfortable until I get it sorted out and working correctly again. I'd fly without a radio if it weren't for talking to my friends when I fly with them, and the safety of listening to other traffic and announcing my intentions when I land at "real" airports.
Without the radio I could get by with a good set of noise attentuators instead of expensive ANR headsets. Loss of hearing is one of my major problems when it comes to communicating in my airplane. That is not going to be a problem though. I can do a lot of flying in the US without a radio. The only time I need a radio is to land at controlled airports in the US. However, if I ever get back to Canada I am going to have to have a radio to land at any of their uncontrolled airports where commercial/passenger carrying aircraft land.
In that case, I could carry a handheld and headset until I got into Alaska.
We are under a tornado warning here in Elmore County, Alabama. Guess I better keep an eye open and stay close to home today.

John,
Didn't stir me up at all. Frankly, I was pleased to hear you were interested
in my project. I'm looking forward to firing it up, too.
Personally, I'm happy we all have different Kolbs. It'd be pretty darn boring
if they all looked exactly the same, and all had the same identical equipment. We'd all
be like a box of Cherios. Not a lot of diversity, you could say.
My "experiences" from flying, and my construction abilities (whatever they are??),
plus my interests in general, make me want to build 'my' plane, I recognize no one
else has my preferences, and will build what they want. I like that approach.
When I bought my MkIII kit back in '98 (what!!?). the Rotax 912 wasn't really much of
an option. I didn't want the 582, so I decided to go with a less popular choice, the
GEO 1.0. The Raven Redrive guy Jeron, recommended the IvoProp. So, that's
what I got.
If I had a choice today (and the money), I'd probably go a different route. But
there's not a lot I can do about it now. I don't have the money to chuck this one out,
and start over.
Tornado warning? We had ours about 3 days ago. Blew through Kansas like
an arrow (right above Rick G's house) and raced across Missouri like it was on a mission.
Just a cold dreary day, today. Good day to get back to work on my electronic circuit.
BTW, I do agree with you re: stuff to break. The stuff I'm adding isn't stuff that
causes the plane to become a glider. They're mainly for my enjoyment, just fancy lights
and stuff like that.

BTW, I do agree with you re: stuff to break. The stuff I'm adding isn't stuff that
causes the plane to become a glider. They're mainly for my enjoyment, just fancy lights
and stuff like that.

To me, if an item is installed on the airplane and decides not to work, it is an item of concern and will bug me until I get it operational again. It doesn't have to be a flight essential item. An item that is non flight essential, if inop, is still a source of concern (worry) on my airplane, e.g., landing light, position light, strobe light, etc.
The tornados passed us by but left us with a lot of rain.
