Has anyone every looked into putting a turboprop on a Rocket. Seems like a
match made in heaven to me.

EAA Chapter 288 had a nice presentation last month on a turboprop that weighs 50# without gearbox and prop and puts out 242HP. It is a great looking engine. Cost - $90K with gearbox.

All the calculations I've done indicated that fuel consumption is the
problem - or more specifically how much fuel you can carry. That's what
Inodyn (now defunct) were trying to figure out with their computerized fuel
management system.

Below 300 HP, internal combustion is hard to "out-compromise".

Having said that the RR300 they're putting in the Robinson R66, looks real
interesting. Now if you've got unlimited funds, that might be a project ...

Dan,

There comes a point when weight vs horsepower becomes an issue. The IO-720 weighs nearly 500 lbs installed. The Comanche 400 (IO-720) is a very cool airplane but burns alot of gas for the weight. Roy Lopresti's Comanche 260 with clean-up mods could go just as fast.
A P&W PT6-6 turbine weighs just under 300 lbs and puts out over 600HP (not de-rated) The problem is cost. A good friend of mine actually removed his IO-540 from his F-1 in lieu of a 200HP flowed and balanced IO-360. Why? Weight and handling. He shaved over 160 lbs off his empty weight and only lost 8 knots at top end. Not that I'm removing my 540 anytime soon, I get to fly ALOT of RV's and sometimes I too miss the light nose and empty weight of my 150HP wood prop RV4.
The advantage of a turbine for me would be the "less nose heavy ness" and ability to run diesel or kerosene.
