For those that care, I just discovered that when tethering the iPad to the internet through the iPhone using MyWi, the GPS location from the iPhone is sent to the iPad. Does anybody know if this works at altitude? That would be an alternative to having the 3G iPad or if you don't have an external GPS receiver. For general location I imagine this would work fairly well.

Jesse,

It might, but it's probably easier to purchase the add-on GPS from Bad Elf, www.bad-elf.com. It's worked well for me on both an iPhone and an iPad. Rated to 1000kts and FL600.

Best,

Bruce Smith

does the 'bad elf' require a clear view of sky, or has anyone used it in vehicle without clear view.

Works fine in the plane (182) and five meter accuracy in my house. It does lock on very quickly with a clear shot and somewhat slower under cover as would be expected.

Larry,

I got mine yesterday but have not flown with it yet using ForFlight. I have done some in the house and car testing today and find it usually locks on within 30 to 40 seconds and generally hold a 10 meter accuracy and occasionally 5 meters. I was out at Sky Ranch today walking around with it and it seems to hold a good GPS lock although I have noticed the same with the iPad onboard GPS with a WiFi connection and E net.

In the house in Airplane mode, without WiFi or E or 3G, ForFlight reports "No recent fix". When the Bad Elf GPS receiver is plugged in it blinks for 45 to 60 seconds, as designed, as satellite data is loaded, then solid light indicating lock acquired and 10 meter accuracy is reported. It's solid at this point, showing 1 to 2 kts and direction as I walk around with it. Pulling the Bad Elf caused ForFlight to report "No recent fix" again within 15 to 20 seconds. Plugging it in reports a connection as before in the same approximate time.

Just some observations at this point. No conclusions until I have some time flying with it.
