Found an interesting web that describes how to set up the Harbor Freight's current HVLP spray gun # 43430. Harbor Freight has them on sale for $40.00 in the store price but go to their WEB site and buy it for $20.00. Even if you don't like it, for 20 bucks you can always paint the patio furniture with it. No, I have not tried it but I ordered one.

Harbor Freight HVLP? I bought a Sharp HVLP, around $120 as I recall. Marginal results, you must clean, lub and renew the internal filter often. A friend finally tired of my complaints, loaned me his Binks HVLP. Whole new world. I'm keeping the Sharp for the patio furniture.

I have the 43430 which I used to paint a rocket back in July... in
Phoenix... 110F-115F...
I was using a krylon water based paint recommended by a buddy of mine.
The gun worked flawlessly,
but the paint was almost dry by the time it hit the airframe. I went
through 2 qts of primer, and one coat of
white. (Rocket is 16" Diameter and 11ft long.) I was pretty happy with
the gun, but I'm also an amateur and
supposed I wouldn't know a great gun from a so-so gun.
I'll be using it again in the next couple of months with 'normal'
temperatures... 80's to 90's... relatively low humidity and
we'll see how it goes.

Hey guys ! You've heard the saying that sometimes you only get what you pay for. Well this is one of those times.I've been around paint shops for about 35 years. I know for a fact that you will never ever get a $1000 paint job out of a $20 dollar gun. You don't need 20 years of painting experience to do a nice paint job but you do need good equipment and when it comes paint guns you get what you pay for.Binks and Sharps are both good guns but you have to buy a good one. Good starts around $250+. If your getting ready to paint a $30,000 dollar airplane I highly recommend you purchase a good quility paint gun! Also a really nice paint job starts with good preperation. Paint does'nt cover up poor preperation it just magnifies it!

For the past few years I have only used the cheap (inexpensive) Harbor Freight paint guns. I recently sprayed my Super Sport with it and have sprayed a couple of Lancair IV-P's, an RV-7, a Titan T-51, a Glastar and whatever else comes into my shop. I spent several years as a painter at the Kenworth truck company in Seattle where I sprayed more than 7000 trucks. We only used DeVilbiss paint guns there, spraying enamels, urethanes and base/clears. So for years after that I thought I had to have the best guns on the market which would easily cost me $300.00 - $500.00 a gun.
So since all spray guns work primarily the same way, I started using the cheaper guns both in the HVLP and regular. I didn't notice much or any difference at all and at their cheap price tag, I consider them disposable. I prefer using the non HVLP guns for finish paint as they atomize the paint into smaller droplets creating a smoother initial paint finish. Although they do not have as good of transfer efficiency as the HVLP, meaning they require more atomizing air preasure which creates more overspray that is blasted into the air.
I did use the HVLP gun for spraying the poly brush and poly spray. That's just my experience!!

Mike, I have new Harbor Freight guns, both HVLP and regular. I can't believe the price of those guns. I haven't used them yet. I am covering a Mod 3 rebuild. I have the Poly Brush brushed coat on and will wait for warmer weather to spray. There is a website that gives advice on setting up the Harbor Freight guns by a guy that is an amature streetrodder. The instructions on his website are concise and complete, very well done. You can access his site by Googling HVLP harbor Freight. I paint a car about once every 15 years so it is a new experience each time. With the # of paint jobs you have done, you must have learned to paint while sleeping. What advice can you give me about Poly Fiber product application and the Harbor Freight guns. I still need to buy a compressor large enough to paint with. Thanks in adavnce.

I have seen the HVLP guns at Menards , Home Depot and Lowes They aren’t too expensive and seem to work well . Also as I have been it the auto body biz for quite a few years and find that the regular guns work better for the aerothane. The automotive base coat clear coat sprays a lot different than the polyurethane does at least in my experience . for the auto paint I use a Sata Jet gun which cost me about 500 and it did not spray the urethane very well as I had to jack up the pressure as to atomize the paint.. This is just my experience and yours will differ .. be sure to practice on something before you start on the actual project. good luck.

I own a good half dozen paint guns, including a turbine based HVLP, and
an el-cheapo Harbor Freight. As far as I'm concerned every single one
will produce a high quality paint job WITH aerothane. The trick is in
adjusting the pressure, flow rate, fan pattern, and thinning the paint.
My personal favorite paint gun is a automotive no-name touchup gun
that I modified to use baby formula bottle's. It's a tad small for wing
size surface, but works great for smaller paint jobs. Keep in mind, that
carrying around a quart of paint, with an attached 5/8" air line can
make your arm ache after a bit ...
HVLP systems are overrated, they blow a hell of a lot of paint into the air
just like any other paint gun so you don't save that much paint. They have
a big bulky airline, etc.
There is simply no magic to painting, it is 100% the trigger puller that
makes the paint job. If you buy a cheap HB and practice you will do
just fine.
Contrarily you can buy an expensive turbine and make puddles on the
floor.
Oh one more thing, the HB Hvlp is really NOT an Hvlp, but rather a gravity
feed paint gun. It is exactly the same as a suction gun, just the paint
drains into the gun rather than being sucked up a pickup tube.
On the other hand you might want something to pump air into the mask
since breathing aerothane isn't a good idea ...
Regards,
Jeff

Looks like the one I have. I have used it to paint with System Three
WR-LPU (waterborne polyurethane), WR-155 (waterborne epoxy primer).
It works fine. The "Hvlp" is a real misnomer, as it is still just a gravity
feed paint gun. It is a decent gun. Take it apart and deburr mechanics
and it will do the job.
I like Aerothane better than the waterborne paint, but I like my health
even more. The waterborne system three I mentioned is for hard
surfaces so don't use it for fabric. I think there are some waterborne
paints with a flex additive. Waterborne paint is tough to paint as it
is prone to as I call it foaming. Where the air from the spray gun
gets into the paint, and the surface cures before the bubbles can
flow out. This is better painted with a true HVLP paint gun, but can be
done if you practice a lot with a conventional gun. None the less water
borne paints can be frustrating.
Another option is rolling and tipping. Go to the KC Dawn Patrol website
and look at how they do it. This is great option for fabric I think. A lot
of people scoff at the idea of rolling on paint, but I've looked at a lot
of boats, guitars, furniture, etc that were done this way and you can
get just as good a finish this way if you learn the techniques.
Regards,
Jeff.

The only difference that I see in the H.F. HVLP and regular is that the HVLP has a larger fluid tip to allow more liquid to flow and the aircap doesn't atomize the paint as well. They are both gravity feed guns which to me is the only way to go. I sprayed Aerothane on my plane and I found it incredibly easy to spray. I did add a little more reducer than called for, seemed to atomize a little better. My first coat was a light tack coat followed by a full wet cross coat and then one more cross coat that was very wet.
As someone mentioned ealier, it is very important to spray a test pattern before each coat. I do it on a cardboard box that I have sitting next to my paint job. I normally spray with the trigger wide open and control the amount of paint going onto the surface by the speed of my arm, always maintaining a consistant speed, distance from the painted surface and always have the gun 90 degrees to the surface the entire time the trigger is pulled. Also, start spraying a few inchs away from the part as you begin moving the gun toward the part to paint. You never want to start pulling the trigger with the gun pointed at the part.
The more lights you can have the better. You have to see the painted surface in the reflection of the light to see how wet or dry the paint application is. I usually run about 60-65 PSI at the regulator which is at the other end of my 50 foot hose, the pressure will drop a little before it gets to the gun.

i am dragging up an old thread because I have a question about guns. While I believe it is possible to do a good paint job with a cheap gun, I think that it requires a lot more skill. So, me having no skills to speak of, I am willing to pay a bit more to know the equipment will do its part. I always see Binks show up on threads like this as being one of the premium guns. So are most all the Binks guns a good choice or do you still need to go to their higher end? I have found their BHV gravity feed HVLP for what I consider a reasonable price, about $175, but I have no idea if this is the sort of thing that will do the trick. Any opinions?

James, I used the Harbor Freight HVLP gun that lists for $60 and was on sale for $30. In addition there is a website that a guy told exactly how to set it up. It is a great gun. I swear by it. I went back and bought another one. I'm no professional. I paint infrequently. It always takes to the end of the project before I am really doing a great job. Just make sure you have adequate lighting and know how to use it.

James,
I think you'll like the Binks, as I recall mine was around $150 - year 2006

I just finished painting my Piper Pacer wings. I purchased a Devilbis Finishline 3 HVLP gun from TCP Global for $129.99. I am very happy with the gun. It is by far the best paint gun I have ever used. It does require a lot of CFM and I ended up needing two compressors but the paint went on mirror smooth.

i am dragging up an old thread because I have a question
about guns. While I believe it is possible to do a
good paint job with a cheap gun, I think that it requires a
lot more skill. So, me having no skills to speak of, I
am willing to pay a bit more to know the equipment will do
its part. I always see Binks show up on threads like
this as being one of the premium guns. So are most all
the Binks guns a good choice or do you still need to go to
their higher end? I have found their BHV gravity feed
HVLP for what I consider a reasonable price, about $175, but
I have no idea if this is the sort of thing that will do the
trick. Any opinions?

I also should add that I fall into the "no skill" category when it comes to painting .

If I may, I'd like to add a comment (tip) on paint spraying. First the viscosity, temperature and humidity is critical for a good quality finish. I painted many classic cars a few years ago. I would always make a test spray pattern on a sheet of masking paper prior to starting my project. NOT NEWSPAPER. Newspaper has loose fibers that blow into the paint and the color sometimes will bleed through the paper. When I start, I would always start at the area least seen by the customer, like the right rear quarter panel, down low. The most seen area or the area where people will judge your work is the nose, the leading edge and the door areas, then the tail feather section. You can paint outdoors but it must be just after a rain shower, when the sun is shining and no wind...just about never. Start spraying from the area farthest away from your exhaust fan. The little over spray you see on unpainted panels will melt in. If you get blushing, the humidity is to high. If you get dusting condition of the paint-you might need retarder.Oh yea- keep a roll of 2" masking tape on your side while painting. When (not if) you get a run, put the gun down right away. Take a piece of tape about 8 to 10 in. long. Make a loop in it like the sign of the omega. Sticky side out. Slowly move the looped end towards the run. very carefully push the tape into the run then lift it off. The run will be removed. Let it set up a bit then give it a couple light passes to blend in the area. Nothing shouts out more of an amateur paint job like a run in the paint on the cowling. -Tom

First, Let me admit that I am by no way an expert, but I have just finished my Model IV Paint. I used the Harbor Freight HVLP gun at about $30 on sale. I honestly don't think a million dollar gun would have helped me a bit. If you were to check out my paint Job, the first thing you would notice is that parts of it are near perfect and other parts are pretty far the other way. They were all painted on different days under different conditions in a home made PVC pipe and vinyl sheet paint booth. I think Tom's advice is the real deal. No amount of money on a gun will change the result like managing the conditions. I always started early in the cool of the morning and sometimes finishing later in a warmer day than I would have preferred. You can tell the difference in the early paint and the later paint same gun and same guy- early glass, later tendency toward orangepeel. In an ideal situation and if I had the time, I would have done all my painting a section at a time and at a time of day where the temps were ideal. I am in the foothills of the Sierras so humidity is not much of an issue unless a front is passing through, but with our usual rather primitive conditions, I think the final result will be most affected by temps, humidity and dust. The gun, in my humble opinion is not the big factor. Then I always say that after a bug or two on the leading edge, no one will see the the rest unless you are painting a show plane.
Another comment. If he paint is urethane, it can be polished. I checked online for some tips and tried a piece of fabric under the horizontal stab for a test site. It can be done, and once flying, I will have ample time to do a square foot at a time to get it back to where my vision had it before reality stepped in for me. They recommended 1500 grit followed by 2000 then buffing compound followed by a glazing compound. These are designed for machine application, but can be hand applied with really good results.

I've heard good things about the Harbor Freight gun, but I notice an enormous difference between guns shooting urethane car and boat paint. I've used a Campbell / Hausfield and a Sata Minijet and the mini reliably sprays a consistent pattern of very finely atomized paint. I can't say the same about the C/H. What I've read and noticed is that the cheaper guns have a "sweet spot" of conditions and paint that they'll often reliably shoot. You just have to find it and stick with it.
