I find this totally insane. Flightprep is suing runwayfinder.com for $3.2M per month. Runwayfinder is a free site and has been online for several years. I think Foreflight may use runwayfinder for some of their charts etc.

Agreed. If anything, it's funny, because seeing a company act
like that makes ME at least inclined to NOT want to do any
business with them at all. I used to actually like flight
prep's free planner, and I bought and used their EFB for a
while too, before I got Voyager. They hosed me so bad for
renewal on charts that I jumped ship. But, I still thought
they were OK. But after seeing how they are doing this,
I think it's time to spread the word who NOT to go with
for charts. Who wants another monopoly?...not me.

They came to the fee by looking at the total number of hits
to their web site in a month, and multiplying it by
the cost of their annual subscription, or something like
that. We all know that website hits aren't a real
indicator. I have been to the site (runwayfinder.com) from
time to time just to see an airport on a sectional quick.
I had many other options for looking it up, but
runwayfinder was quick. Not worth a planning subscription
over though.

Roger Stenbock is a member of our aviation club. He was/is/and will remain ego-maniacal. After we built our clubhouse in 1995 and the access road to it, he proceeded to name it for himself at the county Airport. Every week I have to drive Stenbock Way at Aurora State.

His greed has not helped GA. Good people and products have been harmed. Let me apologize to every that he remains a member of Columbia Aviation Association founded in 1949.

Bump.

Free online map data:

http://aeronav.faa.gov/index.asp?xml=aeronav/applications

Don't support Skyvector either, they bought a license from flightprep.

As a software engineer and pilot, flightprep has no case, unfortunately it will require $$$ for runwayfinder to beat this unlawful money grab by flightprep in our inept legal system.

Cool cjay, thanks for putting the link to http://boycottflightprep.com
out there. I didn't know there was such a place but I can totally
see that it deserves to be known, because many good flight planning
websites are going to be lost if for nothing else than the fear
of the lawsuit.

I used to think they had an OK product. Now I just hope they
go under quickly. Would be nice to see that such idiocy is
rewarded by total failure....and quick, before we lose too
many other good vendors.

Looks like the idiots at FlightCrap(prep) have been now targeting
the news organizations. It's no wonder we haven't really heard
a huge uproar from the normal news channels (AvWeb/AOPA/EAA and so
on)...they're chicken from posting news about their advertisers.
Thank goodness there are still some people who aren't sold out
to their advertizers...but it sounds like FlightPrep gets pretty
nasty. Check this link:

and the rest of the industry will flourish.

This reminds me of the Apple vs Microsoft lawsuit over a 'Windows GUI'.. The courts ruled against Microsoft, seems like a similar situation:

if no one buys I think they will crash and burn.
Stopping at flightprep is not enough make a point to tell DUATS that you are
no longer using their flightprep product http://www.duats.com/cirrus.shtml
and instead moving to DUAT where voyager is run, or AOPA.
Same goes for ASA products. When all avenues are shutdown there will no

I think the list may be missing the point. Flightprep doesn't care if
they're still in business .... the income would be from the licenses and
royalties ..... because they'll attack the little guys first who'll
either buy licenses or disappear .... and then they'll move up the food
chain until someone fights the patent in court ..... and who knows how
that will turn out.

Yeah, I figured this would be their plan....maybe they're sinking
as it is, so this is their last-ditch effort. Anyway, with luck,
they'll have cut off their cash source and perhaps it won't be
so appealing to hire lawyers if they risk losing everything
over it.

If I were in their shoes, I'd be doing an about-face right
about now, and offer the "licensed technology" for free to
all users, and apologize to the industry and then do whatever
I could to bring my reputation back. Wonder how long it will
take for them to get to that point?

I'll post Deems's and Chris's emails next. I see their
email client is sending stuff again, but it's being embedded
in a way that's making it unreadable to us.

This is Deems's email:

This whole thing reminds me of Apples lawsuit against Microsoft about a
'Windows GUI" the courts ruled against Apple in that case (it took 4
years in court)

if no one buys I think they will crash and burn.
Stopping at flightprep is not enough make a point to tell DUATS that you are no longer using their flightprep product http://www.duats.com/cirrus.shtml and instead moving to DUAT where voyager is run, or AOPA.
Same goes for ASA products. When all avenues are shutdown there will no longer be a business need for them.

Maybe with luck, 2011 will be the last year of their existance
and the rest of the industry will flourish.

As a software engineer and pilot, flightprep has no case,
unfortunately it will require $$$ for runwayfinder to beat this
unlawful money grab by flightprep in our inept legal system.

Well, the big guys aren't biting and if no one buys from any Flightprep run
businesses, hence my suggesting telling DUATS you wont support them,
Flightprep will have nothing.
I agree it may go down to the patent in court but if folks stick to their
words it doesn't matter how Flightprep plans to make money if no one buys
the software indirectly. Seattle avionics has an alternative that is not
impacted by the patent, so already there are options that will work.
If no one buys Flightprep, they will go down as spending a whole lot of
money on a patent/lawyers and have nothing to support them in business.
Personally, they should have done this the right way. Use the money to
develop better software and Flightprep would have done just fine. Instead
they wimped out and decided to remove competition to force people to settle
for what they have.
The consumer decides who gets their business, many don't care about
Flightprep, but most do, if DUATS gave up their licensing/royalties to
flightprep due to losing their clients, it WOULD make a difference. Same
goes for ASA, there are numerous other options to ASA training videos.
The only point I know I am going to be missing is that of pointing my
computer to any Flightprep run software based company.
