I just want to verify that I didn't make a mistake, since it's unusual that Van's would make a mistake like this.
On page 47-7, (picture attached) the upper cowl pin retainer I have doesn't fit between the hinges. Thus, I need to trim a slight bit from each hinge, for the retainer to fit in between. Also, my pins will not fit in the pin cutout area, so i will be trimming that as well.
Thus, just curious if anyone else encountered the same issue? I double checked all measurements. Just seems odd for such an intricately designed part to actually not fit.

Mine didn't fit either.
I think it's the fiberglass cowl that varies. My lower cowl was a real mess, way off specs.

my upper cowl was way off, so much so Vans thought I had a defective one
(which it was) but was told by the vendor to use a heat gun and reshape it
into position. Took months to finally get it to fit.

to start on the cowls........ More fiberglass fun!

In this case, i don't think the cowl is the variable.
The plans have you drill a reference starter hole on the F-1001N left and right hinges, which match up to holes in the forward top skin right in the center.
If i measure everything out, the retainer doesn't fit between the angles which represent the hinges in this photo here: http://lh6.ggpht.com/_E3nI7J8M6Iw/TRlZt1ixKSI/AAAAAAAACLk/UFfV-fc9DhU/s640/IMG_0059.JPG The lines do line up with the holes, just a parallax issue.
It just seems odd, since the retainer could have been made narrower to fit, or the measurement on the reference hole could have been made to fit as well.
Just wanted to double check before i started cutting my cowl hinges, which i worked so hard to get to this point!

Bob, just a warning, i thought the cowl was much harder than the doors, personally.
The doors are easier to see exactly where it should fit in relation to being flush in the door frame. you can just step back a couple paces.
The cowl, on the other hand, must be positioned in 3D free space relative to the spinner and firewall, and clear the engine and prop governor. also, if you want to get pickier, the split line between upper and lower halves should be relatively level. All the while, you are walking from the left side to the right side, to the top of the cowl and crawling around on your back on the bottom while avoiding the gear leg and prop. I ended up using levels and even a laser level line to get some fixed reference points to work by.

don't worry, Vans told me they never saw this before should be no issue
for you..
As a highly referencable builder states in his site for the cowl "The cowl
has been taking a bit of time. It's actually a very simple operation".
You'll do fine!

Also Know that the engine is also pointing toward the right so the left side of the cowl is longer than the right side.
I made some modification to my top cowl pin retainer mechanism so that it slides down very far out of the way on those lone rivets and when I rotating the screws the mechanism raises up and locks the pins in the cut out.

Might want to consider 1/4 turn cam lock fasteners. Makes it a lot faster to remove the upper cowl
