I just finished a write-up last night on my most recent
project. If you have older kids or Teenagers especially
that will be riding in the back seats of your RV-10, this
may be something you really find interesting.
If you rarely use your back seat, or only have one kid,
you probably could care less.

http://www.myrv10.com/N104CD/upgrades/20101228/index.html

I spent a lot of time figuring out what to do, but the
actual task wasn't too bad. I really wish I had thought
of some of these concepts (especially the passive mixer
for the rear input) when I first wired the plane.

Anyway, I couldn't be more thrilled now with the audio
system in the plane...the kids were pretty happy that they
can now have individual music, and yet share a movie
and do it all via Bluetooth.

Your Lightspeed Zulu must not have been working very well. My kids gave me one for Xmas and I used it in the plane (737) from Ontario to Denver to Nashville. I was tired and the plane seemed extra loud. After putting on the Zulu I was even able to take a nap it was so quite. So, you must have gotten a bum product.

Ha! Get used to that feeling. Dreaming helps.

I keep telling myself how much fun the build has been but it's sounding
a bit hollow as I sit here with little to do waiting for
paint-compatible temps.

Good dreams,

I am interested in other reviews. I have a Bose X, tested and it worked great in the -10, I have a Lightspeed 30-3g tested in a -10 and that too worked fine, so I assumed the Zulu would be better than the 30-3G, I have yet to test them in a moving -10, they sounded great standing still
What is important about Tim's review is Aviation consumer news rated then better than Bose in the 2009 buyers guide, but Tim mentioned that it was the -10's IO540 that did not resonate well with the Zulu, I think a Cessna or Cirrus was used for the test. Avweb mentioned (http://www.avweb.com/news/reviews/lightspeed_zulu_headset_review_197123-1.html)
"Compared to the Bose X, we noticed a significant reduction in cockpit noise in passive mode, which is only marginally important because most active noise reduction (ANR) headsets will be powered at all times. When the ANR system was turned on, the Zulu got even better. How much? The techies say the combined passive/active noise reduction is about 8 decibels better than anyone else. Regardless, in our subjective testing, the Zulu was more than a match for the Bose Headset X, though it's not a runaway victory: "very good" versus "even better."

So what is important is not whether the Zulu is a great headset, but if it is in a -10.

Anyone with the Zulu flying in the -10.. thoughts please

Tim;
Great writeup, thanks for the time an steps you took to make the solution work out.

Thanks!
Pascal

Any viable comparison should be done with at least two separate sets of the same model in Head to Head evaluation. I have a Decibel meter I can provide to record the base line noise level of any RV-10 and will get a spectrum analyzer to add to the establishment of specific RV-10 noise generation. NO other aircraft need volunteer. I doubt Tim's is noisier than most except for the dueling MP3 blue tooth "soon to be teens" in the back seat.

This thread is a good one following the Christmas of 2010.

Noise Attenuation is a great new thread which I could throw suppliers into the mix if the audience wanted. Pegasus AeroMarine - Dan Newland (OSH 2009 Speaker). EAA may just have audio tapes of Dan's presentation. And I live right down the street from Lightspeed if anyone has Quality Control issues or needs a local strong-arm.

Happy New Year.

Tim, you must have a bad Zulu headset. I've been using Zulus in my RV10 for a couple of years now- quietest ones I've used, including Bose. No issues at all....

Well, IMHO, headsets are like primer and other metal prep. Depends on head siz/shape, ear size, ear sensitivity, sweat glands and just personal preference. I could live with either one, and I can easily see where one could be better on a given head than another. I wish the Bose had better passive protection, I wish the Zulus were an ounce or two lighter and less clamping. I wish Bose treated their customers a bit more like Lightspeed re trade up, etc.

I'd have to say that it either had to be a bad headset or
something strange then. They were pretty darn bad. The
low frequency stuff really got through bad. Now, when I
powered them off and on, there was a big difference, so I
know the ANR was at least functioning to some reasonable
degree. The performance of it was what wasn't good. If
I squeezed them in on my head, I'd say, for pulling a number
out of my butt, that maybe it was 85% of what the Bose X's
were.

Now last night I went flying for the first flight with the
A20's from Bose. Those were actually noticeably quieter
than the X's, which surprised me. I remember throwing them
on in the booth at OSH and thinking it wasn't too big a deal.
I think though that it's important to test them in the same
plane, at the same time, swapping them on and off your
head. You get a real sense of what sounds you are reducing.
The Bose A20's actually get rid of so much low frequency
noise that the engine itself sounded higher pitched to me.
It was much more faint, but it really took out the lows
better. The X's were always very good for me. You turn
them on and it quickly ramps up the ANR, and then it's
much quieter.

If someone every brings a set of Zulu's with me, I'd be
happy to try out another pair....after the experience,
and the fit for the kids, I'd have to say that even if
they came out as good or better than the X's, I wouldn't
take them. The Bose sets are actually quite a bit more
flexible in terms of who they'll fit. I'm sure you could
take them all the way from a 2 year old up to a large
adult. If you truly have a very large head, I think
the Zulu's would ultimately feel more comfortable to you
though, to be honest. But the Bose are by far the most
flexible in size range....so a pair of X's or A20's would make
a great set in the aft seats because they'd fit anyone.

Headsets, to me, are a very personal choice. If the performance
of the Zulu's had been up to par, I'd likely have pursued
a couple pair. That said, now that I've tried the A20's,
and have the music system built that I do, I'm much happier
with the setup I have.....it's more flexible. Lightspeed
did a good job with the music input on the Zulu though.
Wish we saw more of that in the industry. Bose really
lost that one.

Final notes.... First, I think just because a headset works
in one plane, doesn't mean it'll work as well in some other
type. Second, to me, I don't really care if one headset is
$100-200 (or even $500) less than another. If you use them
as many hours as I have, it really doesn't matter...what
matters is that after 10 hours of X/C, you still weren't
bothered by them at all.

One note about the A20's, that is kind of cool. Since
they have batteries in them (you don't need batteries to
use them panel-powered though), you can buy a LEMO to
dual plug adapter, and use them in standard jacks. So for
those who hop planes a lot, it may be the most flexible
set available. The price isn't really too bad for the
adapter, either.

I did try to love the Zulu's. I was pretty pumped when I
bought them. I'd love to wear another pair some day so
that I can write that they work just as well. It just
wasn't the experience I had. I did have the latest model,
too...the new ones don't have the FRC button anymore.
I also really did get some offline replies from a few people
who said they had the same experience I did....so I can't
say it's just me.

I have to say that Lightspeed has a very fine support group. If you still
have the headset Tim send it back to them to have it checked. I had a
problem with my 30-3G that had feedback during runups only, turned out it
was the CAP 182 issue, and Lightspeed ran it through some test and did some
fine tuning. They sent me new gel pads on the headset too explaining that
they saw no issues but the pads might help fill any gaps that "may" have
caused the issue. They really took an interest in seeing this resolved for
me even if they couldn't find anything wrong with the actual set.
I was getting worried my Zulu would not be what I expected, glad to see the
positive feedback on this issue.
Thanks!

I'd have to say that both companies have provided extremely
good service for me. Lightspeed was great to work with in
regards to they even sent me the thicker headpad a few minutes
BEFORE I actually ordered the headset from Aircraft Spruce.
I don't still have the headset...I actually took almost
an $80 hit to return it...but I wouldn't have been happy
being stuck. I've heard most people have great support
from Lightspeed. The only complaint was that on the older
plastic "wide-load" headsets, people get great support but
that's because they're constantly sending them in for
repairs to broken parts.

Bose too...at one point, they had a couple versions of
mic, with different gain levels. I wanted the other
ones, and they paid for overnight and 2nd day shipping
to get them to them and back for mic swaps. At OSH
every year, I walk in and for free, they replace everything
that may have any issue...ear seals, head pad, cord,
cord repair, yoke....anything. They're really top notch
when it comes to support. I've never paid a dime for
support for them. That's actually one reason I am
getting A20's...5 years of warranty and I can look
forward to being catered to at OSH each year if I need
anything.

So from a support standpoint, I think you'll be fine with
either company. I am happy that Bose is made in the USA.
That really is getting to be an important issue to me.
I am losing respect for TCM, Cirrus, and all those who
are sending things to China from our industry. Enough is
enough...if we want jobs in the USA, we need to keep
making SOMETHING here...and I'm happy to pay 10-20% more
for it, if it's as good or better quality...it's either
that, or they're going to be taking more of my taxes to
help pay for all the people laid off from their jobs, and
I think most people would prefer to actually be happily
working somewhere.

At least what John says below.

A factor I've personally played with is sunglass temple style versus ear muff. Getting a great seal without glasses is pretty easy on all of them. Getting a great seal with various temples is a major challenge and game changer. The most effective approach is to choose your sunglass/eye glass temple style with your headset in mind.

NO other aircraft need volunteer. I doubt Tim's is noisier than most except for the dueling MP3 blue tooth "soon to be teens" in the back seat.

I thought I would add to the Bose band wagon here. I purchased the new A20s at Oshkosh
I was on the fence between the Zulu's and new Bose. I already had the older Bose. And really
Liked them. I bought the new Bose and on the way home my wife and I compared. I was shocked at the difference. It took me a while to get use to flying with them because they are
So quite. I can hardly here the engine.
I then had the chance to fly in another rv-10 with the new zulu's and then flew in my airplane right after that. The Bose were still better. I was hoping the zulu's would be as good or better.
Not the case in my opinion.
I have flown for 10.5 hrs in one day with the new Bose and never new they were on my head.

Tim,

If you're in St. Paul and want to try another set of Zulu's out, I have a set with GA plugs you could compare (and it will only cost you a ride!) I started on Bose X's and liked them, but the A2DP is what sold me on the Zulus.

The set I got from Lake and Air at Fleming still has the FRC button on it, and this was the first I heard that they've removed that button. Must have been on the shelf for a while.

Tim, you must have a bad Zulu headset. I've been using Zulus in my RV10 for a couple of years now- quietest ones I've used, including Bose. No issues at all....

I just finished a write-up last night on my most recent
project. If you have older kids or Teenagers especially
that will be riding in the back seats of your RV-10, this
may be something you really find interesting.
If you rarely use your back seat, or only have one kid,
you probably could care less.

I think we can do that Ed! Let's hope for some good
weather. The A2DP lacking on the Bose did really
tick me off at first. I actually called twice, and
wrote in twice, trying to make sure it got escalated
to the project manager that I thought they really were
going to be at a disadvantage if they didn't add that
feature. For me, it's now a non-issue. The plane
is wired in even a better way. But had they been
available, I probably would have gone that route
and saved time. I should be glad...but still, I hate
to see them offered without a key feature that some
people would love.

From what I understand, all the FRC buttons are gone
on the latest version. They basically turn it on by
default now. The music did sound pretty good.
Maybe it's only the newer versions that have ANR
issues? Or, maybe I just ordered one that was built
on Friday in China? Smile

Ed, if you see a good weather weekend coming, shoot
me an email. It may be a while but we'll find one
where we aren't getting pummeled by snow or ice.
