Hello to all,

I have been lurking around the Lightning List as well as the Lightning websites (Arion's own and Max and Olena's) and finally got around to signing up. I am a NAVY Helicopter pilot by training (It's OK Buz, some of my best friends are Air Force), but I also enjoy fixed wing flying. I recently got some refresher training in Pipers, and remembered how disappointing the rental fleet frequently is. That led me to start looking at buying. Unfortunately, as you all know, you can't buy much in the certified world for less than the cost of a very nice new home. Enter homebuilts into my scan.

I was (and am) intrigued by the Van's RV line, but I just don't think I have 4-5 years worth of attention span. After searching the internet high and low, I discovered the Arion Lightning, and think it my be right up my alley. Built as an EAB, it seems I can get reasonable cruise speeds of over 130KT, while keeping the fuel burn under control. The build cost seems reasonable, and I like the idea of using a "real" airplane engine, even one with a relatively short history, on this side of the pond at least.

I'm planning to build an IFR capable platform, just to offer a few more flight planning options and the perceived added safety benefit of being able to get myself out of inadvertent IMC. I'm still trying to determine if this is "legal" I seem to be getting different info as I research. Does anyone know if there is a definitive answer to this question? I'm assuming a properly certified pilot, but I'm not sure about equipment and lightning protection. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Finally, I wanted to say thanks for all those who contribute to this list and of course the Newsletter. From the numerous pictures, stories, and Buz's colorful commentary, I feel like I already know many of you. I look forward to meeting some of you at the Sebring Light Sport Expo.

Hi Case,

My Lightning is IFR-certified; if your airplane meets 91.205 equipment
requirements, it is legal to fly IFR.
I have a Chelton Sport system with backup airspeed, attitude, altimeter, and
a heated pitot tube. Good luck in your build; I definitely recommend the
builder assistance program if you want to finish quickly.

Welcome aboard, Case. I'm sure the entire Lightning community will welcome you to our esteemed group even though you are a Navy "chopper" pilot. Wink Now that you have discovered the Lightning, your fixed wing flying is about to become a lot more fun.  Where are you stationed? Perhaps a current Lightning flyer is near you and can provide a flight.

I just noticed that Linda has answered your question about an IFR certified Lightning. As far as I know, she has the only currently flying Lightning that is IFR certified. I considered getting my Esqual IFR certified when I first built it and even called both the Atlanta and the Richmond FISDO offices to ask what extra equipment would be required in addition to the equipment I currently had. Both of them said a heated pitot tube would be required and one office (can't remember which) also said that a VOR nav system would be required to back up the installed GPS.

First off, thanks for the responses and prompt welcome! It's nice to know there are folks checking the board regularly. Linda: Thanks for the info on the IFR issue. As for the VOR, someone I spoke to (Pete (at) Arion??) mentioned the FAA recently changed the wording of the IFR requirements section to remove the reference to "ground stations". This seems to indicate that they were giving a nod to the capabilities of GPS. That said, I plan to go with a GNS 430 hooked up to my EFIS, so I'll have the benefit of both. Now to figure out what to use as a backup if the GPS goes poof....

I am in Jacksonville, FL for about another month completing my SH-60B refresher syllabus. After that, I head back to sunny San Diego, CA.

Hi Case,
Came back from Miami last night, so have a look at your schedule and we'll go flying.
The book did indeed change from "ground facilities to be used" to "equipment appropriate for the proposed route" two years ago, but, as discussed, in order to file as /G you need a certified GPS - 430 in your example.
As a suggestion, make an allowance for a 3G iPad with ForeFlight software in your budget - that thing rocks as an EFB either VFR or IFR.

Hey Case: I have to agree with your decision on airplanes. I have owned 6 Bonanzas as the primary way for my family to see everyone while on leave (I flew SH-3's). I am sure San Diego has changed a lot since I was last stationed there. I live in Frostproof FL, and plan to be at Sebring so hope to meet you. If Max does not complete your ride before then (and even if he does) lets plan to go aviating while you are in Sebring.

From what I saw over in Qatar, if the cappuccino machine was out or the beds were lumpy, the swagger faded pretty quickly. Not sure if they were soft, or we just haven't figured out proper deployment living yet... Very Happy
