As some of you may remember, I had my 2" tapes come loose on the wing tops
due to slight shrinkage in high OAT's. Anyway, I'm finally tackling the job
to correct the proplem. My question: Is there a reliable method to simply
cut the tapes at the trailing edge, pull back the existing tapes to the
leading edge and reglue (Poly Brush)? After reglueing, can you iron the
tapes down through the existing Poly Tone paint? The other option is to
completely replace the tapes and that will get messy. I'm stuck on the best
repair method. Either way, once complete I will paint white stripes along
the tapes to prevent shrinkage in the future.

Hi Don!
Still in the little helo business?
I am afraid that there is no way not to be messy
replacing the tapes. Maybe the Poly people know of
one, but last I knew you can't iron poly-anything,
except polytack, without it making ruts. I tried it
on my rudder and ended up replacing the whole fabric
back there due to ruts from ironing.
I was told that you need to clean it down to the
fabric, replace the tapes, then build it back up to
the surrounding surface, UV coats and all. Dont know
how you would get the old tapes off without stripping
down to them anyway.
Sorry. Maybe the Poly People have a better idea.

Agree with Kurt. Take it as close to the fabric as
you can then you'll be able to blend in the coatings
as you come back up.

Ted

Thanks Kurt.
I played with a test rig today and decided it would be just as easy to
replace the old tapes with new. The old tapes peel off easily so no problem
getting the old ones off. When they shrank, the bond was broken.
BTW, no more helo work for me. That outfit was just too shaky.

Don,
Just a thought, why don't you pre-shrink the new tapes before you apply
them. I had my wings finished, ready for the UV polyspray coats, when
discussion on this list made me decide to rib-stitch. My nephew, who is
working with me on my vixen, was a contributing factor in my decision to
rib-stitch. I did not remove the two inch tapes but applied the stitching
tape and thread over them. I used 3 inch tape over everything. Your thread
about the "shrinking tapes" made me decide to preshrink the 3 inch tape.
After ironing them the only measured 2 and 3/4 inches wide. IMHO a
worthwhile procedure for the wing tapes.
Flly Safe,
Nelson

Another thought on the tapes. When I was building, a neighbor at the
airport was finishing a Cristen Eagle and was using cotton finishing trapes.
All they do is give thickness to areas of potential abrasive wear. He chose
the cotton because the pinked edges don't tend to curl up likd the polyester
tapes do.
Cotton won't shrink in the sunlight.
