Just had my 582 rebuilt. Was in the process of doing the Rotax breakin procedure. Pushed throttle in for the first high rpm blast. Engine rpm dropped out. Thought it was a major problem. Turned out cable broke at the mixer. Has anybody else had this to happen? Sad

The cable clamp is supposed to pivot in the mixer. My clamp was binding causing the wire to bend back and forth. The wire broke right at the cable clamp. Throttle control was a A-790 (acs 05-08036). Is this the best cable for this application? Has any installed a spring to make the throttle to pull the throttle open in the event of a cable break? Would rather look for a suitable landing site under full power. Confused Been awhile forgot to put personal info.

Thinking about an in-flight loss of throttle control is pretty scary. It was something I considered when I built my Kitfox. My conclusion was that throttle reliability would come from smooth operation and took care to insure that. Still a little worried, I added a visual examination of the throttle linkage to my preflight checklist. Indeed the cable bends a bit as the lever travels from min to max, but it's a smooth bend with no stress point. And there's never any kind of a kink that forms. The pivot gets greased at every annual. Myself and two Kitfox friends have not added a spring nor have we done anything other than insure operation is smooth - between us we probably have 1800 hours.

As another thought, the pivot has a single point that digs into the cable wire. If that loosened, throttle control would be lost. So some guys on the List here (including me) have added a brass cable stop (AutoZone p/n 03338) to both sides of the pivot.

Hope this helps.

Mike

I just recently put the oil injection back on my engine. This added another spring for the throttle wire to push against.

Hi Warren,

I remember when I built my aircraft, I did not like the geometry of the throttle linkage - the arc of the lever causes some sideways movement in the cable wire. I fiddled around with it for quite a while. I resisted any temptation to put an offset in the wire. But being I've only worked on Model I and Model II aircraft, perhaps your Model IV throttle linkage is a bit different. I'm hoping you can find a way to keep the wire from binding or kinking. If you sent a photo, I'd be happy to look at it: flybyewire(at)gmail.com
