Ralph,

Very nice videos. I was particularly impressed with the audio quality. You gotta tell us how your intercom/radio system is set up to get that quality with very little background (engine/prop) noise. All my in-flight videos have loud continuous engine/prop noise in the audio.

Thom/gang,

I needed a patch cord that would take the audio from my headset and patch it into my Canon Rebel T2i camera with an external audio input jack. I found one here:

http://www.mypilotstore.com/MyPilotStore/sep/1978

They call this a "video recorder adapter" but it's really an audio splitter on the headset.

Once I got the cord, I noticed the plug didn't fit into my camera well, so I cut it off and spliced in another one that fit better. The audio works well and cuts most of the engine noise out. I think that I can improve on it by putting in a fresh set of batteries in my wife's Lightspeed ANR that the cord was plugged into as the batteries were dead. When uploading the videos, I noticed a feature to even the audio level but I didn't use that and maybe it would improve it more. I'm still experimenting, but this is a step in the right direction.

Thanks, Ralph.

My Lightspeed headset has a plug-in jack for cellphone connection and a patch cord for that purpose. I wonder if that would work since I now take most all of my in-flight videos with my iPhone. When I get airborne again, I'll give that a try. If that does not eliminate the background noise then I'll see about the adapter you posted a link to. Thanks for that; I didn't know that sort of thing existed.

I don't carry passengers in my Slingshot so I don't even have an intercom. I plug my headset directly into my iCom A-6 transceiver. My goal is to record audio commentary on the videos without all the loud background noise.

Thom, you can hear audio with the patch cord that was included with your Lightspeed headset. I did this before I bought the one below. It will patch audio into any recording device with an audio input jack. You will hear all radio transmissions coming through your headset. I didn't try it when I spoke on the radio, but I think it will record that too. The only thing it didn't do was record my passenger conversation over the intercom. This is what the patch cord in the link below did.

I'd give my left one for a radio that sounds that good!

It's a Microair 760 panel mount radio. I think it sounds better recorded in the camera because the cabin noise is drastically reduced when it bypasses the headset sending the audio signal directly to it. My ears hear the cabin noise and it doesn't sound as clear when listening through the headset, but then my hearing is getting worse as time passes on. The patch cords are shielded which helps cutting out engine noise too. I have to say that I was impressed myself when I played the video back and could hear everything recorded in the cockpit except a few transmissions that were very noisy like that guy that tried to contact me when taking off from Gilligans.
