I can't find any place in the parts where they sent me enough of these screws to attach the seat rails. Did anyone else have this shortage or am I missing something?

  

 And I thought that as the part count went down it would get easier to find needed items.

You probably just need to do what we've all done.... put an order together with Spruce, or another hardware supplier, of practically every nut, bolt, screw. nut plate, washer, cotter pin, tubing, etc, so that you just MIGHT have what you need, when you need it.  Obviously it'll take a little time to iron out the quantities, but it's worth it.

 Couple of hundred bucks ought to do it.

I just dug mine out last week.  They were in a brown paper bag with all the other bags of hardware that came in the finish kit.  There were over 100 of them IIRC.  I temporarily installed my seat rails and stripped two of the Phillips heads when I removed them.  Had to drill them out of the nutplates.   I will use Torx drive screws next time they get installed.

It's been too long for me to remember exactly, but it seems there IS something about the seat rail screws -- some countersunk, some not? not all the holes in the rails are used?  Others that are at that stage or have the plans handy, chime in here.  Or lay the seat rails out where they fit and check it out.

For what it's worth, I have no idea what I got and what Vans gave me, but I 

am one of those that ordered all sorts of items from Spruce so I always have 

extra's on hand for those times I need a hot swap for a stripped hardware 

item or more commonly, misplaced items.

Yes, you should just order 100 packs of many standard size screws,

all the common ones, and all of the ones you need for

commonly removed items.  I ordered maybe 10 lengths of

each size screw, 4-40, 6's, 8's, 10's....so that's a lot

of screws but in 100 packs its not a big deal.  You'll want

them long term for maintenance anyway.

Yes guys I have been doing this orderring of all different bolts and screw...but, and as is the case these are 8R10s, I have 8R7s. 

 My finishing kit did not contain these screws. 

 I'll place another order and wait a few days. It not like I am doing anything you all haven't already done.

 What I find difficult to do it order through Spruce because they use a different system of numbering. Anyone have a conversion chart?

You can order them from Van's, as well. I don't know if Spruce is cheaper, but you can order any quantity from 1 on up from Van's.

Hi John:

I order everything from Aircraft Spruce.. Don’t really have a conversion chart but most everything has dual designations there. Type in AN509 and the listing comes up for MS24694. From there you can see the second column contains the older AN509 dash number.  The -8R10 looks to be MS24694-S7. 

Hope that helps out some.

But that's what I mean....I ordered like 8R7's, 8R8's, 8R9's, 8R10's, 8R...   If you prepare and order some additional sizes above and below, you'll be ready.  I found many places where a slightly longer screw was nicer, or where I had some reason to switch.  And for some locations I used stainless screws instead of the Cad plated, depending on what it was for.

You'll want to probably replace ALL of the wingtip and fairing screws with stainless, and leave them unpainted if you don't like chipped paint screws.

Do the same with AN bolts, especially 3's and 4's....get some additional sizes.  For general hardware, I found it better to just empty the Vans baggies into parts bins all sorted out, and then order a pile of replacement and additional hardware so I had a more complete assortment of hardware.  At this point I rarely need to order anything.   It promotes good maintenance because you feel happy to replace a screw when it's in worsening condition, rather than reusing it because you didn't have one.

Buy 100 packs of cotter pins too....especially the ones for the axles.

And washers, and nuts both nylock and all-metal.   You'll also find that in doing the engine you don't always do things 100% identically to other people, so you'll want extra Adel clamps, and non-nylon nuts in the engine compartment.  Washers too of course.  The list is long but if you're going to be your own mechanic later you may as well spend the $200-300 on extra hardware....even some sizes not in the plans.  If it were a rare size, I ordered 20, but common I just went for 100 packs for the discount.  You can usually go up a size if you need to, in a pinch.

Thanks Bill. I referenced bag 1435 in my kit which is located in my "quickbuild Fuselage Kit." My Firewall Foreward kits have bags in the 500's.

  

 Indeed, this bag 1435 does contain the AN509 8R10 screws but there are only #20. That would leave me five screws per rail. 

  

 Weird how Van's inventory with the kits ship, but it is an wonder it works at all.

  

 BTW not only have I been orderring extra of everything, but also now have the plastic Plano boxes to label and sort them.

a real aviation supply house (Spruce)is first  choice for the extra hardware but when they don't stock it, try McMaster Carr  for example, for the cap screws for nose wheel stops and Wheel pant outboard  "1/4" type stainless.

One thing to check for is that your seat

Rails are not being distorted once you

Screw them down. Both sides on my 

10 needed shinned at the aft end.

I believe the plans talk about this. I have

A .02 shim on the one side and without it

The seat can will hardly move.

 Tim's wife says, "Honey, you have more extra bolts, washers, nuts and screws then you could ever use on our plane."

 His reply, "Yah, I was thinking about that and I would hate for them to go to waste, I think I should start another project, it will be done once the kids move out and we only need two seats."

 each size screw, 4-40, 6's, 8's, 10's....so that's a lot

When I received my kit, I scanned in the entire inventory document using a text converter, and then cleaned it up using MS Word, where it is easily searchable.  I then just put the bags in plastic drawers purchase from the aviation section of Lowes.  The drawers are numbered with the bag number.  When I need a specific part I just punch it in to the work area laptop, and it tells me which bag its in.  Vans told me they were in the process of converting all of the antique inventory forms to Word.  They sent me the QB Fuse list, which is all they had done at the time.  It sure makes it easier to find stuff.  I never did anthing more than a bag inventory.  I did find that I was short 300 of the CS4-4s, which Vans sent me ASAP, no questions.

But that's what I mean....I ordered like 8R7's, 8R8's, 8R9's, 8R10's, 8R...   If you prepare and order some additional sizes above and below, you'll be ready.  I found many places where a slightly longer screw was nicer, or where I had some reason to switch.  And for some locations I used stainless screws instead of the Cad plated, depending on what it was for.

You'll want to probably replace ALL of the wingtip and fairing screws with stainless, and leave them unpainted if you don't like chipped paint screws.

Do the same with AN bolts, especially 3's and 4's....get some additional sizes.  For general hardware, I found it better to just empty the Vans baggies into parts bins all sorted out, and then order a pile of replacement and additional hardware so I had a more complete assortment of hardware.  At this point I rarely need to order anything.   It promotes good maintenance because you feel happy to replace a screw when it's in worsening condition, rather than reusing it because you didn't have one.

Buy 100 packs of cotter pins too....especially the ones for the axles.

And washers, and nuts both nylock and all-metal.   You'll also find that in doing the engine you don't always do things 100% identically to other people, so you'll want extra Adel clamps, and non-nylon nuts in the engine compartment.  Washers too of course.  The list is long but if you're going to be your own mechanic later you may as well spend the $200-300 on extra hardware....even some sizes not in the plans.  If it were a rare size, I ordered 20, but common I just went for 100 packs for the discount.  You can usually go up a size if you need to, in a pinch.
