There were three Kitfox aircraft here locally that I am aware of. There may
be (probably) a couple I am unfamiliar with so far. One (sister to mine) met
with an approach stall I think (it had a very heavy Subaru engine in it)
Details are sketchy because the pilot has no memory of the incident. One
other was destroyed after many hours in a bad float landing, totally pilot
error. The reason I bring these incidents up is that in both cases the pilot
hit their heads quite badly on the cabin structure. This is no criticism,
both pilots survived and one had only minor injury, a major plus for
Kitfoxes IMHO.
The reason I bring it up is to ask if others have padded the tubes above our
heads or if they wear a helmet. I am somewhat tempted to the latter as I
have very little hair and a helmet would provide protection from sun as well
as impact. Anyway, I was thinking about it and watching videos of papilot's
vw Kitfox on YouTube, noticed the pads and got to wondering what others have
done.
Those tubes probably hurt like the dickens and they aren't that far off my
noggin.

A proper fitting and secured helmet is excellent protection, a proven safety devise, the padding of the tubes will only help with bumping your head while getting in or out the the plane will provide no real protection in the event of a accident. A helmet must fit properly a chin strap and a neck nape strap are needed for full benefits.

One of my test pilots also bumped his head in mine so he suggested
padding, which I did, and just never removed it.

This has been a concern of mine too. I went down to my local Home Depot and purchased pipe insulation for tube padding. Works just fine.

Oh yes. I covered the tubes to the side and rear with foam tube

insulation. I've used them many a time, as I fly in any turbulence. The
hard one to protect is the perfectly vertical -1 g bump that raps your
headset band smartly into the skylight. I once saw a Kitfox skylight hit
so hard this way it popped the fasteners along one side and back edge.
I'm getting shorter with age though so maybe this won't be a problem in
the future.
