List:

I have been having problems reading the subject newsletters for the last year or so on my IMacs. I have copied the emails between Jon and myself below. The bottom email is my original and the one immediately below is Jon's response:
"Hi Stan,

Well - you know we've talked about this before.... the only people I hear
problems with the DVDs are Mac users! (Don't shoot the messenger, please!)
They don't seem to be quite as compatible with things (DVDs) that are not
created by a Mac... Other Mac users are just as upset and frustrated as
you when this problem arises... and we need to acknowledge that this is a
Mac issue, period!

I highly recommend getting a $39 Walmart DVD player that hooks up to any TV
set... comes with a nice remote control for fast forwarding, slow-mo, etc...
Plays all DVDs just fine... you can even buy a small brand new TV nowadays
for a lot less than another computer.... And I do test every disk that I
create before shipping... so the only complaints I get anymore is when they
are delivered broken in the mail..

These are supposed to be fun and easy to play and watch... I am sorry for
the frustrations of making these work consistently... I believe the
variations you see are due to the change in the DVD disk manufacturers we
purchase from issue to issue... but like gasoline that you put in your
car... they should work regardless of what brand or blend your purchase. If
one insists on using a PC to view the DVDs, simply get a modern Windows PC
-- I have had no complaints for years. (there are always exceptions, of
course - so many variations of player software, etc)

Good luck,

Jon

Stan, I believe the problem is at the software level.I too have a Mac running Snow Leopard, and it works. Note that I don't watch each and every DVD I receive, so potentially there could be one or another that the Mac would reject. The most trustworthy app that reads almost anything is VLC, a free download ( http://gofree.com/download/Video/Media-Players/vlcmediaplayer.php?gclid=CIvB-pCmnKcCFRVx5QodmWkCew ). Again, not a Mac problem, but a player problem - IMHO.Otherwise, I have received DVDs (at least two) that are scratched as if they had been shipped with a very fine grit sandpaper. I believe some abrasive dust found its way into the DVD envelope.I mentioned this to Jon and he promptly replaced the DVD. Good luckCarlos CH601-HD

My Mac is a 7 year PowerBook. It's never failed to play a DVD in those
seven years until the latest newsletter DVDs. I assumed it's some
non-standard thing in the authoring tool used. I didn't spend much time
worrying about it. When I mounted the disk in Linux there were some
obviously Windows specific files there, which seems suspicious to me.
Linux played the DVDs fine, using VLC. Since the problem seems to span
several generations of hardware, I'd guess is purely a software
problem. My guess is the Apple DVD Player is a bit more particular
about following specs than most.

That was the tipping point for me is renewing my subscription... The DVD that was sent would not play on any of my computers. I had to watch it on an old DVD player that was set up in my guest room. I considered it too much trouble to have to go down there just to watch it... By the way, it is the ONLY DVD that would not play on any of my computers. It is not like they are trying to protect sensitive national secrets. <GG>

I own a Mac & a Dell laptop w/ Windows based PC. I use the Mac at home and the Dell on the road. All of Jon's videos, including the HBH videos which I've been using to build a 750, run fine on my Dell. About 1 in 5 run on the Mac. I've received many video links through email that run fine on the Dell and not at all on the Mac. I hate my Mac.

Keep up the good work, Jon.

Jimmy
I'm not a computer guru and I'm not sure how it works but I downloaded a program called "Flip4mac" and have had no further problems reading the Zenith DVD's on my Macbook.

That's really odd. Flip4Mac is a set of programs that let the Mac
decode Windows "only" file formats, I.E. those that are not normally
available outside of a Microsoft product. Windows media files, .wma
and .wmv are the obvious examples. There should be nothing on a DVD in
these formats. I've had Flip4Mac on my Mac for years and I still have
issues. I'll see if there is a update available for my old hardware to
see it helps.

Mr Young, if you really hate your Mac, send it my way. If M.S. every
ditches Ballmer and joins the 21st century, I might use Windows again,
while not under duress. Until then, I'm a Mac/Linux guy.

Jon, if you are listening, I love the DVDs and the news letter, but get
some better authoring software!

Ron

I have a Mac and have no trouble viewing the videos. When I insert the disk, DVD Player launches and the video runs. I am running Snow Leopard (OS 10.6.6) on an intel Mac Mini and DVD Player Ver. 5.4.

Check your system preferences under "CDs and DVDs" and make sure "Open DVD Player" is selected under "When you insert a video DVD".

As I recall, I had trouble under earlier versions of the OS and used "VLC media player" to view the individual video files on the discs.
