Jerome,
Blue smoke or black smoke? Heavy smoke or a light smoke trail? What do the spark plugs look like? Carboned up or oily/wet. Black smoke is generally due to the engine carberator being set to rich for one. Blue smoke is another issue entirely. Could be a broken ring, warped valve guide, burnt piston, or the mixture to rich to name a few things. I would not fly it again until it has been looked at little closer. Do you have the capability to burn an oil sample? Are you making large enough chunks of metal to set off the chip detector?
Those are a few things to worry about.

Jerome:  Gary Gabbard here in Las Vegas.. Yes that sounds very framiliar, back while I still had the Huosi Engine in my CJ, I was coming back from Oshkosh, I had the same thing about half way back.. As it turned out it was the Carburetor, apparently a diaphram had ruptured in the Carb.  I had a friend ship me another Carb.,  changed it out and the problem was cured...   Gary

Hello all,<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

Please advice,

Today during my take-off with a 52 I did not had the power as usual. After take-off ATC called me that I did had a thick trail of smoke behind me, which did hung there for a while. I did check my engine during flight with several power settings and I did notice that, when full power applied the engine was running like my grandma’s rocking chair…. When power a bit reduced everything was running fine, but not the power I’m used to.

The cylinders are OK for sure. My mechanic told me that the cause might be the carburetor. Does anybody have other suggestions?

Jerome

Jerome I ran an engine that ran like crap at full power had a broken gear on the blower shaft, no boost pressure and black smoke at full power. Simple check on run up at 65% and full power manifold pressure should be above ambient or in hi the 80"s. Another simple thing that makes it run like crap did you center the fuel primer? if not it just dumps fuel to the engine.
