My buddy Jerry and I took a flight to Milaca for lunch. I took some video of the flight. It was a great flying day as you can see in the videos.

Ralph,

You've got a very good looking Kolbra there. I've always thought the Kolbra to be the sharpest-looking profile of all the Kolbs.

I got to fly a couple of hours today myself, and it was nice to catch some air again. A friend of mine and fellow Kolb driver Robert Laird took a photo of me flying over his property. I did not know about it until I got home and saw he had emailed it to me. He must have a powerful telephoto lens because I believe I was around 900' agl while over his place. My Firestar looks pretty good from 1000' away, not quite so pretty at 5'.

Thanks for the ride Ralph. Pretty day indeed. I liked hearing those cables slap when you landed.

Travis,
I have to give credit to Mark German for such a great job building the Kolbra. I enjoy flying it along with my Firestar that I built over 24 years ago and still flying.

You are right on that.
Mark did a flawless job on the build of your machine.
I sure would like to have your Kolbra in our Booth in Oshkosh this year.
The Kolbra is a nice design with lots of room in the rear.

Ralph,

Nice videos indeed! Thanks for posting. Again, your audio quality is outstanding.

I noticed in the first video you were cruising at 90 mph IAS but did not see what RPM the 912 was turning. What RPM gives you that IAS, and is your IAS fairly accurate?

FWIW:
I cruise most of the time in my Slingshot at 85 mph IAS (which equals TAS at about 2000' density altitude) to keep the noise down to a tolerable level. That is at about 2750 rpm on the Jab 2200 (3300 rpm is redline). 2750 rpm direct drive with 64" prop gives about 600 mph tip speed, which is noisy enough.

Good catch Thom. When I posted a view of the panel, questions arise. After I bought the Kolbra, I thought the ASI read a little high and found it actually read 10mph higher than it should. I got used to flying it that way and never tried to recalibrate it. The cruise is actually 80mph and not 90mph as it indicated. I wish it was 90mph. If I installed a 100hp 912, maybe it would approach that speed. I will have to look over John Williamson's Kolbra specs as he did have the 100hp 912 and our planes were identical in function.

Ralph B:

John W's Kolbra cruised at 80 kts (92 mph).

Max speed was 90 kts (104 mph).

When we flew cross country together, John W would have to slow down to my
cruise speed of 70 - 75 kts (80 - 85 mph).

Generally, John W was 10 mph faster than me across the board.

When he was flying with the Jabiru, our cruise speeds were the same, but
there was no comparison between take off and climb performance. Don't
remember what prop John W used with the Jabiru, but he flew with a 68" three
blade fast taper Warp Drive on the 912ULS.

John/gang,

I enjoy the economy of the 80hp 912 at 3.5 gal/hr. It may be a little slower in speed, but on a 500 mile trip it would only save 42 minutes of time. I would spend the time saved pumping more gas into the tank and making more fuel stops, so would it really save any time? Something to think about.

Ralph:

Normally, the 912UL burns 4.0 gph at 5,000 rpm (normal cruise rpm for most
of us).

If you are only burning 3.5 gph you must be turning the 912UL slower than
5,000 rpm.

I think you have the best combination with the Kolbra and the 912UL. You
get better fuel economy, more time out of spark plugs, and can burn 87
octane auto fuel.

My first 912 series engine was a 80 horse I installed in 1994. It was a
good engine. Made my flight around the country and up to Alaska with it the
two months after I installed it.

John, Since you have flown with both the 912UL and the 912S, other than economy and speed, what other things have you noticed between these two engines? Can you burn 87 oct in the 912S? I know that both engines can use 100LL, but I have never used it since owning it. I've never seen a problem using 87 oct mogas. In fact when changing the oil, I have seen bits of lead still coming out of the engine from when Mark was using 100LL. The plugs are always clean and I decided to change them every two years. I have never drained any water or phase separation (the white matter of ethanol combined with water) when checking the fuel before each flight. I would much rather use the mogas if offered a choice and with gas prices the way they are, it's cheaper. Of course, when flying cross country, there isn't much choice as not many airports offer mogas. When I fly into Price County airport (PBH), they have mogas and it's cheaper than 100LL. I go back and forth there to the cabin and make regular trips in the summer.

Ralph

91 octane in the 912 s

87 octane in the 912 ul

Up to 10 % ethanol..

Ethanol free is preferred.

Dennis, I am using a Canon Rebel T2i camera in HD video mode. It has an external mike input on the camera in which I used a patch cord that splits the headset audio and sends it to that input on the camera. Doing this cuts the engine noise to a minimum and it only picks up what the headset mike hears. Get the patch cord here:

http://www.mypilotstore.com/MyPilotStore/sep/1978

They call this a "video recorder adapter" but it's really an audio splitter for the headset.
