What will be interesting to me is learning about how various airplane
engines will run on gasoline with some or a large amount of ethanol - such
as used in Brazil. I am convinced that this country will move in that
direction if we really want to be free of oil dependence on countries that
do not seem to like us or what we are about. Specifically, Rotax's;
Continental A65's; Continental 200's; VW and other conversions. How might
this affect builders, etc.

This is a group that is running an IO360 (I believe) on E85...I think it
burns a hell of a lot of fuel (as you would expect cus there is much
less enegery stored in a gallon of ethanol compared to gas) so the range
has to be considerably shortened.

The way I justify it is to run a small car and then I know my neighbours
in there SUVs are using more fuel than I am...Smile

Making the engines run on alcohol is no trick. But most of the seals and
rubber parts in the typical engine are not compatible so would have to be
changed - not sure how because I don't think you can run down to the nearest
NAPA store and buy ethanol compatible stuff for your <insert your engine
type here>.

It does take almost twice as much alcohol (volume) to make the same power so
you'd be burning twice the gph as with gasoline. One must open up the main
jets to get enough into the cylinders. Even if the fuel half as expensive
it's not even a break even deal considering the cost of modifying the engine
to be compatible.

And last but not least, the vapor pressure of alcohol is way less than
gasoline so the well-worn warning of vapor lock in the lines between the
tanks and the engine is even more likely with ethanol than with gasoline.
Not to mention the ability of alcohol to absorb water....(hummm, that might
be a good thing..?)
