I'm starting to think it might be time to move on from my UltraStar. It's
a great airplane, and I love flying it, but for what I want, it's... limited.

I'd like to take somebody for a ride on occasion. I'd like to be able to
handle grass fields over 6" tall without trashing my prop. I'd like a
plane that's easier to repair if, God forbid, that Cuyuna gets quiet and I
have to put it down in a rough spot and break it (there aren't many spots
here in CT that _aren't_ rough).

The sacrilege part is that (gasp!) I'm thinking of a 2 seat Quicksilver (a
specific one, N numbered, that I've flown before, and can almost certainly
get VERY cheap, from a friend, though it'll need some work). I know the
Kolb is a much better, better flying airplane, with the storage advantages
of folding wings and enclosed trailer... but there are the above drawbacks,
too. I can't afford much of anything else (as I said, I can get the Quick
cheap)... otherwise a different Kolb would be an option, I'd _love_ a
Slingshot... or even a FSII...

So who wants to talk me out of this? Or make an offer for a US with
trailer, before I come to my senses?

Dana,

Have you ever had an accident in any airplane?

I don't have any experience with a Quicksilver but know that I would not be comfortable in a fuselage structure made of only aluminum tubing. The one landing incident I had in an early FS that resulted in me flipping over on to my back resulted in minor injury to my shins from impact with the instrument panel. Otherwise, I was completely untouched, except economically.

Many Kolbers have experienced walk-away incidents that might not have turned out so well in all aluminum designs.

My SS is NOT for sale but there are quite a few FS for sale on barnstormers at the moment. Personally, I would not risk my butt in a Quick crash by saving a few $k, even if I had to beg, borrow or purloin the difference in price between a Quck and Kolb.

Tom I couldn't agree with you any more ,Been there done that some glad I had a Kolb Cage wrapped around me instead of being scured with a bunch of Broken aluminum tubes from some other brand L/S Aircraft that's out there

Yes, I crashed a few years back... in an early Quicksilver. It hurt. I walked with a cane for about 3 months afterward, but I walked away from the wreck.

I could have repaired that Quick in a few weeks for a few hundred bucks; similar damage to a Kolb would have taken a _lot_ longer to fix, probably a year or more at the rate I work, and cost a lot more. That's when I sold the Quick, as is, and bought the UltraStar. This is not a criticism of Kolbs, Kolbs are much better airplanes in many ways... but everything is compromise.

It's not just about the material, but also the structural design. I know Quick pilots who don't feel comfortable with the idea of sitting way out in front like I do in my US.

I still don't know what I'm going to do right now... I'm just toying with the idea, trying to decide what I really want, within the constraints of what I can afford.
