|
|
My EAA tech counselor really does not like the Zenith technique to hold the aileron bellcranks.
I was wondering if anyone has experienced a failure, hole elongation, eventual slop, ect using the cotter pin method.
Has anyone added huge washers to help hold the system? Any alternative ways to hold them in place?
Even with the grease it seems like the crank holes will wear. Has anyone inserted a bearing surface between the crank and the flaperon mixer?
Thanks,
John Marzulli

Hi John
I removed my bellcrank at 200 hours to modify it to the stationary plate above the torque tube. It had quite a bit of elongation in the pivot hole already. A bearing there would be much better. I intend to just ream it oversize and press a bronze bushing in another couple hundred hours. The wear is mostly from all the sideloading it takes from the cables tightening with right aileron application. The small cotterkey keeper is in keeping with the rest of the control system design...rather juryrigged, in my opinion. A bolt welded in there instead with a castle nut, washer and cotter key would be better and just as simple. I like the stationary mount. Solved a lot of problems.

John
Sorry. I was talking about the wrong bellcrank...but yes, my aileron bellcranks already have some slop in them too...but of course no sideloading like the elevator one. I have large washers behind the keys on mine. All 3 of the bellcrank mounts can be improved , for sure
Sorry again for not paying attention. The ADD is getting pretty bad
