Listers,
I have been using an SVR Sealed battery for the past 5 or 6 years based an a lister recomendation way back then. First the SVR 14, then the SVR 20, and for the past year or so the SVR 30 (30 amp hr, 350CCA). Even this latest one just barely turns the engine over (O320 with a SkyTec starter), and when it's hot, it is even worse. Fortunately, my engine starts easily and I've only had problems once or twice over these past 550+ hours. However, I've decided to make a change - so my question is. . . What are you using, and, are you happy with it's performance??
Thank you in advance.

Dave-
Many of us are using the PC680 Odyssey VRLA type batteries with good results. It has quite good CCA but is only a 14Ah battery weighing about 12 lbs IIRC.

Your bigger issue is the Skytec starter. If it is one of the original PM
series, it has a very high current draw to over come the compression
stroke. The later NL series (inline) have much less draw, as do other
brands like B&C or Kelly E series.
The PM series need a good battery, excellent battery cables, excellent
connections and grounds to work well. Be sure all your ground cables
from engine to airframe and airframe to battery are top notch.

Check the voltage at the starter. My similar problem turned out to be the 'bendix' on the starter.

I've been using a single PC625 to crank my IO-360 and haven't had any problems in 600 hrs. With dual electronic ignition I'm electric dependent and so I have a second PC625 in the rear position that is the emergency battery. Every 2 years I replace the E battery with a new one and move the old E battery to the front to crank the engine. The cranking battery sits where the fuel pump normally goes in an RV-8.
The reliability of a battery changes if you use it to crank your engine. My understanding is that they have different curves for the reliability of batteries that crank as a part of regular service and batteries that don't crank. This difference is supposed to be substantial so if you can avoid cranking with your back up battery you should.
When I did the initial design I made provisions to crank off both batteries but I've never had to do that. With the arrangement I've got the cranking battery is never older than 4 years and the E battery is never older than 2. The Odyssey batteries are pretty amazing, the PC625 looks tiny but cranks my skytec just fine. Right now the PC625 is about $100 so that's pretty cheap in airplane terms every 2 years, even still it's usually the most expensive thing in the annuals when I do replace it!

I have been using an SVR Sealed battery for the past 5 or 6 years based an a
lister recomendation way back then. First the SVR 14, then the SVR 20, and for
the past year or so the SVR 30 (30 amp hr, 350CCA). Even this latest one just
barely turns the engine over (O320 with a SkyTec starter), and when it's hot,
it is even worse. Fortunately, my engine starts easily and I've only had
problems once or twice over these past 550+ hours. However, I've decided to make
a change - so my question is. . . What are you using, and, are you happy with
it's performance??
Thank you in advance.

I think there was a group buy for Odyssey Batteries posted on the RV list
recently referencing a VAF posting.
Here is something from a VAF posting. I have no knowledge of the company or
who posted the pricing. Just passing it along.
Bohannon *Battery* in Florida:

Odyssey PC680 $115.41 and free shipping. My experience was positive overall
with a quick replies to e-mails.
