My Kitfox III, parked in the, HB Camping was spared, while an Avid in
front and a Cub next to me were wrecked. My tent was flattened.

Pete,
You are one lucky guy! Go play lotto. Seriously, we're glad to hear you and your Kitfox are okay. Were you with the airplane when the Wx hit?

Pete,
As I looked at the devastation in the slide shows, I couldn't help think of
the seeming randomness of the damage. It made me wonder what types of
tiedowns the survivors used and if tiedown method was a factor in who
escaped damage or was not so fortunate. What were you using and do you have
any idea what the Avid and Cub were using?

Lowell,
I saw the screw in's pull out most in the wet sandy soil. I had a
Claw. I was on hi ground. An RV was upwind from me and probably slowed
the wind down some. My gear was sprung in showing that it had lifted up
against the tiedowns. I plan to make longer spikes for my Claws.

I asked some folks in Paradise City the ultra kite tie down area if there were any lessons to be learned about tie down equipment and technique.
The usual various failures popped up. Straps came lose or broke, tie down screw ins came out. Plus planes, trailers, and junk blew into or onto secure aircraft.
One operator said they always use a power auger to implant their tie downs but did not tie down their trailer which was both tipped over onto a picnic table and was both gouged and caved in by a lose plane.
I'd love to read a review done by the oil of contract insurance adjusters, EAA or some one who got a good look at the weak links.

Pete,
I was one of the five guys that stopped and talked to you, Rich and Mary
Jane on Saturday night before the start of Sun-n-Fun. I am very glad that
your plane survived the big storm. I got to see most of the planes that
were damaged that afternoon and you are very lucky indeed.
It seems that most of the planes that survived had the Claw tie downs. I
did not see any Claws pulled out but many screw in tie downs were hanging on
the end of their ropes for all to see. I will have a Claw tie down system
ordered very soon.

Mike,
I plan to get longer spikes for my "Claws". I lucked out. My spikes
were raised slightly and I could pull most of them out by hand. Sandy
wet soil looses 1/2 the strength of any tie down.

Mike you are right -- I would say that the improper securing of aircraft certainly contributed to some of the damages.
Dog -screw in are junk - I banned from my strip as well as those idiotic 1" wide straps or ropes with a tensile of less that 1000 lbs each.
I have others that tie down here have planes break free-- luckily no damage to other aircraft just their own.
I agree that I saw alot of tiedowns still attached to the aircraft at Sun N Fun......... The Claw in my opinion would have helped some of them.
The KF 3 is pretty well destroyed-- it was ties to a casting that likely weighed less than 100 lbs........ each. A Kitfox 3 will lift 1050 legally and likely 2000 lbs before starting to distort. that would need 600 lbs each to hold it down. - at least
