I was camped in the light plane/ultralight area, fourth space from the flight line in front of the four porta potties.

The M-Squared ultralight that "flew" over a hundred yards in the storm and took out that much of the flight line fence,
had the claw tie down anchors, I noticed one of them was missing a leg, it had broke off.

The porta potties were only about fifty feet in front of my tent and I was directly down wind and in the path of the blue
stuff, tent flattened and canopy frame twisted like a pretzel, some damage to my van but have no complaints, many lost
aircraft and it's my understanding that many were uninsured.

My camp mate who built and flies a Bearhawk, had his airplane moved into a hangar just minutes before the storm hit,
the next day, one of the air ops volunteers marshalled him right into another running aircraft that chewed up the outer
rib bay of his wing!#(at)$#%!

If I am not mistaken my panel is bolted directly to those mounts.

So in an attempt to make a blank for my panel I used a mirror as the mold and layed
up a beefy panel of one sheet carbon/Kevlar and two sheets of carbon. I then
made a kiln of sorts out of pink insulating foam sheet and powered by a heat
gun. It worked great and the panel was 140-160* every time I checked it. Problem
is the mirror broke from the heat. I will see whether it damaged the blank
when I pull it all apart later. Here's hoping.

I asked some folks in Paradise City the ultra kite tie down area if there
were any lessons to be learned about tie down equipment and technique.
The usual various failures popped up. Straps came lose or broke, tie down
screw ins came out. Plus planes, trailers, and junk blew into or onto secure
aircraft.
One operator said they always use a power auger to implant their tie downs
but did not tie down their trailer which was both tipped over onto a picnic
table and was both gouged and caved in by a lose plane.
I'd love to read a review done by the oil of contract insurance adjusters,
EAA or some one who got a good look at the weak links.

Lowell,

I saw the screw in's pull out most in the wet sandy soil. I had a Claw. I
was on hi ground. An RV was upwind from me and probably slowed the wind
down some. My gear was sprung in showing that it had lifted up against the
tiedowns. I plan to make longer spikes for my Claws.

Pete,

I was one of the five guys that stopped and talked to you, Rich and Mary
Jane on Saturday night before the start of Sun-n-Fun. I am very glad that
your plane survived the big storm. I got to see most of the planes that
were damaged that afternoon and you are very lucky indeed.

It seems that most of the planes that survived had the Claw tie downs. I
did not see any Claws pulled out but many screw in tie downs were hanging on
the end of their ropes for all to see. I will have a Claw tie down system
ordered very soon.
