 Without going out to the airport and confirming - I think I have been supplied Carlisle Tires with Matco hubs in my CH 701 kit. Does it matter that the manufacturer is the Carlisle tires? Are these type of tires junk? Look perty cheap to me but I'm just an A&P. Is the sealed ball bearing setup not what you want to do.

   

 Wasn't noticable until I started flying but the tires - especially the nose tire - seemed to be out-of-round.  You could spin them on their axle and see the "bump". On pavement you kinda bounce along when taxiing.  Thought all this strange but proceded with flying anyway (POR - press on regardless) hoping that the tires would 'roll into shape' - that hasn't happened in ten hours of taxiing and flying. 

   

 Dosen't seem to be a problem on takeoff or landing until you touch the nose gear tire down then there is a heavy shimmy - constant backpressure reduces the shake but it's not right. I have tried demounting, then remounting with copious amounts of tire bead lube and balancing the nose tire to no avail - still shakes and is out of round AND as the following states biased to one side. On the balancing issue what have you guys and gals done to balance this type of tire?  I know the standard put the red spot next to the valve etc, BUT I don't think there was a red balance spot on the tires - built those up a couple aof years ago - can't remember.

   

 Also the nose tire seems to be biased to the left side of the nose fork - that is to say that the clearance fork to tire is different side to side. There also seemed to be more bearing free play than that of a tapered bearing/cup setup on a production plane. I took out all the free play I could with spacers on the nose wheel axle so the free play is bearing race to inner cup inside the sealed ball bearing. Next is to lay the tire on it's side and measure the hub rim to outside plane of the tire on both side B$ trying to figure out the bias problem.

   

 Ok my capable experts - what does one do now?  I am open to any and all suggestions - even demounting all the tires and starting again, but don't want to just "mount and hope " without a clear plan.  Plan to have the airplane off the wheels soon to put in the "new" gear bushing material that Zenith supplied AFTER I had done the original mounting.  BTW the bottom piece of the right gear bushing material seems to be shearing off at the aluminum, angle edge on the outboard side.  Still think it's airworthy but want the new stuff in there anyway .

You would have to ask Matco where they get there tires from!   I looked 

long and hard to find out who has these tires and tubes other then Zenair!   

I used the tire and tube spec from my 701 drawings... now it's possible 

that Zenair gets there tires and tubes from another source... it's hard to 

know with all of the junk from China.



The tire spec is - Tundra Tire 800 x 6 4 ply  #T8 x 6

The tube is - Tundra Tube #TU800  x  6/7

These are Matco P/N...

They are Carlisle tires. That is the tire pictured on the Matco site.  It is actually a Carlisle Turf Glide tire... a golf cart tire.  They have worked just fine for me.  They are a tube type tire that I mount tubeless with the o-ring around the center of the split wheel to seal in the air.  Much lighter than with the tube.  I you happen to have a tire that is out of round, there is nothing you can do to "fix" it for the nose wheel.  I would move it to the main gear or replace it.

try a golf cart supply place. the standard 701 tire is off a golf cart most truck tire supply places will order anything you want .. my last set cost 45.00 canadian tire and tube .

There are two brand names that Iâ€™ve found, the most popular is the Carlisle and the second is Leslie. They are the same tire thatâ€™s being marketing under two names. I talked to Matco about their tire and it was the Carlisle brand at the time we spoke. As Paul said itâ€™s the Turf Glide model. I looked around and found them from $50 to $65 in the aircraft industry, but I got mine from my local Big Brand Tire store for $45 each and no shipping. They are just golf cart trailer tires, nothing special. As for the quality Phil, youâ€™re quite right, itâ€™s POOR. Not only are the construction variables all over the place so is the weight. My nose wheel and tire set-up took almost a half pound of lead to balance. My last grip is they are really THIN. I can out to fly last Monday and a main was flat. Upon close inspection I found a household thumb-tack in the tire. It had pierced the tire and the tube. Repair was straight forward but, I do a lot of dirt field landings with all sort of rocks, green stuff, branches and who knows what else laying around that could puncher such a thin tire. Getting stuck in the bush with a simple flat is not a fun repair. OK enough gripping. I like the look and the general function of the tire, but is there a better, more dependable back country tire out there? What else have your guys tried?

Yeh those Carlisle tires are only suitable for smooth turf.  They're

about as thin as condoms.....  Their only good point is that they're

very light.

Any real bush use will soon get a flat, and when flat they really do

collapse to nothing, and cause a lot of drag on that side.  I've seen

that send a 701 into a ground loop off the strip and into the

rough....

Much better are McCreary AirHawks 6.00x6  They're the same rolling

diameter but much thicker rubber and sturdier.  But heavier of

course......  Look in Aircraft Spruce.  Don't really need the

supposedly 'leak proof' tubes, they're even more weight and

expensive....
